06x21: Prophecy

Episode Transcript

The episode opens with a series of flashbacks from Rite of Passage and Metamorphosis that focus on Nirrti and her desire to create a Hak'taur, or super host. The final flashbacks are from Metamorphosis with Jonas in the machine and Nirrti telling him that he is capable of so much more.

In the midst of the resurgence of Anubis and Ba’al’s alliance with him, SG1 is on P4X-237 where the inhabitants have been paying a naquadah tribute to one of Ba’al’s lesser minions, a Lord Mot. The naquadah deposits are almost gone yet Mot continues to demand the tribute. SG1 believes that Ba’al has long abandoned the planet and that Mot is acting on his own.

Elori, the leader, intimates that the people would be agreeable to help from Earth in overthrowing Mot. He tells SG1 of an ancient prophecy of strangers who will come through the Chappai and slay their god, setting them free. Elori intimates that the population would be agreeable to help from Earth to overthrow Lord Mot.

However one of the other people in authority, a younger man named Chazen, doesn’t appear quite as enthusiastic. During this encounter Jonas is not feeling well and he has a vision of Chazen, which minutes later, comes true. And then he passes out.

~Opening Credits~

Back at the SGC, Doctor Fraiser, General Hammond and Jonas discuss his collapse on P4X-237. Fraiser has done an MRI which is basically normal except for an area of unusual brain activity. With no explanation of what happened to Jonas, SG1 briefs Hammond of their visit and speculate that Mot is planning to move against Ba’al and that it would be an ideal time to help free the people from Mot.

During the briefing Jonas has another vision, this time of Sam asking if he wants to go to lunch and it’s Mexican Day. When the vision comes true after the briefing, Jonas tells Sam about it and his vision on the planet. She calls it déjà vu, but Jonas disagrees, saying that they’re different somehow. This vision earns Jonas another trip to the infirmary, where Fraiser reassures Hammond that his headaches and visions are not from naquadriah poisoning; Jonas has no signs of developing schizophrenia. What Jonas does have is that suspicious spot on his MRI that is looking more and more like a tumor.

O’Neill, Teal’c and Carter tell Jonas about Fraiser’s findings. Jack is skeptical, Teal’c looks like he might be a bit more understanding. But then Jonas has another vision, this time that a Tok’ra by the name of Sina is coming to the SGC. The klaxons sound and indeed, Sina of the Tok’ra has come through the Stargate to discuss new developments in Anubis’ efforts to take over all the other System Lords. Ba’al and Lord Yu are fighting, Yu escapes. “You go Yu!” Sina glares at O’Neill. With this information, SG1 is even more convinced that now would be the perfect time to help the citizens of P4X-237 revolt against Lord Mot.

Jonas’ headaches become more severe and his condition continues to deteriorate. He discusses with Sam the possibility that his ‘tumor’ is the result of Nirrti’s genetic manipulations. No matter the cause, the tumor continues to grow and as it enlarges, his risk increases and according to Fraiser, he will ultimately need surgery to remove it.

Hammond decides to send SG1 and SG15 back to the planet to see what they can do to help the citizens to overthrow Lord Mot, but keeps Jonas on base because of his medical condition. Jonas remains resistant to any treatment, believing his visions can provide them with a unique tactical advantage in their battle against Anubis and the system Lords. Hammond gives him twenty-four hours to prove that his ability outweighs the risk to his physical condition.

Jonas seems exceptionally driven to use his visions and says that his precognitive ability could be invaluable. Fraiser, with her usual caring insight, tells Jonas that he doesn’t need to continue to prove himself, he’s valuable enough already. And then he has another vision, this time of a medical emergency involving a critically injured Sam. Jonas races to the gate room just as SG1 and SG15 are preparing to depart and says they have to scrub the mission. He tells them his vision and it’s decided that Sam will sit the mission out while O’Neill, Teal’c and SG15 continue as planned.

Once back on the planet, Elori is very clear in his request for help against Lord Mot, saying they will do anything to be free. While they’re discussing tactics for dealing with Mot, it is confirmed that Chazen is a collaborator when he leaves the planning and goes to summon Mot with a Goa’uld sphere.

Back on Earth, Jonas is getting sicker and when he hears an announcement of a medical emergency, he races out into the hallway where his vision of Sam being injured comes true. While working on the gate, a capacitor blew; Siler sustains a minor injury, but Sam’s is more severe. She develops V-fib, an irregular heartbeat caused by the electrical discharge and requires cardiac defibrillation right in the hallway. Fortunately, the defibrillation is successful.

Later that day, Jonas goes to visit Sam in the infirmary. He looks terrible and he feels guilty. He wants to use his visions to help, but even with knowing what was going to happen, she was still injured. He and Sam discuss the physics of precognitive ability and the paradox of a future that is predetermined if you have the necessary knowledge but how according to quantum theory, that knowledge is unobtainable. At best, Jonas is seeing probable futures.

On the planet the situation is also deteriorating. Chazen reveals himself as an agent of Lord Mot and scout ships have landed on the planet. SG1 and SG15 are placed in prison; Lord Mot comes to visit. O’Neill is insolent; Mot is arrogant and has a plan to destroy the SGC which will enhance his status with Anubis. However, before he does that, he will deal with the insubordinate villagers.

Jonas has collapsed and wakes up in the infirmary. Fraiser tells him they have to operate, his condition is critical. However he has a vision of the gate activating and SG15’s IDC coming through. Hammond opens the iris and a firefight ensues, resulting in a bomb being brought through the gate. Hammond is injured and in a valiant effort, closes the iris, but it’s too late and the bomb explodes. Jonas tells Hammond of his vision and pleads for more time.

Fraiser agrees and using meditation candles, Jonas tries to control his visions. He sees the planet, he sees the Stargate and DHD, and Major Pierce is dialing Earth. Jaffa attack and a firefight ensues. It’s apparent that the SG teams are outnumbered. Pierce is injured, probably killed. Teal’c is killed and the vision ends with O’Neill trapped at the DHD. Jonas collapses again but is able to tell Sam of his vision before he’s wheeled off for surgery. Sam reports to Hammond and he decides that they will dial the planet and then warn them of Jonas’ vision. Hammond refuses to send any other teams, citing it as too dangerous.

Back on the planet, Elori’s daughter Natania, has brought refreshments to the Jaffa guarding them. Fortunately for SG1 and SG15, her refreshments contain a sleeping potion and the Jaffa collapse. Natania sets them free and guides them to the Stargate so that O’Neill can call for reinforcements. While Natania is taking them to the Stargate, back at the village Chazen intercepts Hammond’s radio message to Pierce and O’Neill and sends someone to check on the prisoners.

When it is confirmed that the prisoners have escaped, Chazen decides to take action and gain favor with Mot by sounding the alarm that the prisoners have escaped. SG1 and SG15 approach the DHD and they hear the sound of a Jaffa horn, which alerts them to approaching danger. The Jaffa attack, but with the advance warning from the alarm, our heroes are prepared and have taken cover and are successfully fighting the Jaffa.

Mot confronts Chazen, who brags about sounding the alarm. Mot is furious, he tells Chazen he allowed the teams to escape, but by sounding the alarm, Chazen has ruined the ambush. Mot is going to kill Chazen but Natania appears and shoots Mot with one of the SG team’s guns.

Former neurosurgical operating room nurse sjhw_tolerance will now ignore the highly inaccurate and cringe-inducing operating room scene where Doctor Sandy Van Densen and Janet Fraiser operate on Jonas and remove the brain tumor.

While Jonas is undergoing his operation, his last vision is being played out in the gate room. The gate is dialed and SG15 sends through their IDC. Hammond, Sam and Walter are in the control room. Heavily armored soldiers pour into the gate room and fill all the hallways. Hammond decides to take a chance and opens the iris. Everyone waits tensely…someone appears. It’s O’Neill! They rush down to the gate room. O’Neill requests more teams to go back through the gate and then realizes there’s more firepower in the gate room than usual. “Expecting someone else, sir?”

The mission to free the people of P4X-237 from the control of Lord Mot and hopefully any future Goa’uld was successful. And so was Jonas’ operation; the tumor wasn’t malignant but was composed of overdeveloping neurons, clearly the result of Nirrti’s interference. He is recovering and O’Neill, Sam and Teal’c come to visit. Jack seems a tad bit disappointed that he won’t be able to use Jonas’ precognitive ability for future gain, i.e. lotteries, Vegas.

Jack tells Jonas to get well soon, we need you out there. Jonas seems a bit surprised by O’Neill’s friendliness and after O’Neill and Teal’c leave, he asks Sam about it. Sam tells him that she knew O’Neill would warm up to him eventually. Jonas is still disappointed that he has lost his precognitive ability and we are all left to ponder the fact that while the future isn’t predetermined, SG1 fulfilled an ancient prophecy by helping the people of P4X-237.

Discussion Questions:

1. Why do you think Jonas seemed so determined to keep his precognitive ability even in the face of possible brain damage from the developing tumor?
2. This isn’t the first time we have seen conquered individuals turn against their people and side with their conquerors. What do you think motivated Chazen to collaborate with Lord Mot? Fear, money, promise of power? Do you think he was wrong, or is there a right or wrong in this kind of situation?
3. If you could have the ability to foresee the future, would you want it? How would you use your gift?
4. In this episode we discover that there is a ‘Mexican Day’ in the SGC’s dining hall. What other ‘food themes’ do you think they have at the SGC? Please elaborate on the menu choices and team favorites.
