Doesn't everybody have one of these posts?
I often daydream about winning the lottery. If I did, I have so many things I'd do with the money...
First off, I'd do practical things like pay off the $50,000 of debt that I owe to my private and federal student loans, my car payment, and credit cards. I'd be instantly debt-free instead of slowly bleeding the money out until 2020, like my budget suggests. Yes, I have written out my budget for the next 9 years because that is precisely how long, at my current rate of pay and current payment options, I will be able to pay everything off. I hope sometime in the near future that will change due to me finally figuring out what my calling is and making a decent wage off of it, but that's another post for another time.
Next comes the fun part: gift-giving!
I know there's a maximum amount of $250,000 per person that I can give and not get hit with penalties. I'd want to give more to certain individuals, and maybe I could do so later on in later gifts. Here's a list of recipients I'd want to give money to:
My parents: It would help them quite a bit with their retirement, as long as the dollar was still worth something by the time I could give it to them.
My sister and her family: Maybe they could establish college funds for the little guy and the twins. And help Jason with his dermatological problems. And buy the twins a car each when they both turn 16. And a few other things that I'm sure the family needs. And even a few things for her and her husband that have nothing to do with the kids!
AnnMarie: I think it would be wonderful to help her do what she is most passionate about: her art. I would be her patron, which would hopefully give her the freedom to create without having to work. I figure patronage would go beyond just writing that initial check: I could also purchase equipment, fund exhibits, and maybe establish a gallery space, if she was interested. And buy her her own studio. That would be fun, I think. And I would make sure KittyMuff and Katie could get any procedures they might need--which has nothing to do with patronage, and more to do with friendship. It's my money, I'll do with it what I want.
Kim & Bobby: I think $250,000 would go a long way to helping them and their family be healthy and happy.
Yael & Eran: This would definitely help pay off their student loans. And maybe they would be able to find a nice apartment or house.
Apryll: I would love to be able to buy her a car and a house! Not to mention maybe a Kindle or Nook so she could download her own books and not have to worry that friends might bring her really crappy things to read.
Jessica & Irfan: They could do whatever they wanted with it: pay off debt, buy a house, maybe even travel to visit Irfan's family.
I hope I didn't miss anybody... I'd also want to give miscellaneous checks to other people, too. And some of my favorite charities and organizations would also get a donation from me.
After that, I'd invest most of it and spend the rest on buying a new car, a house, retaining a lawyer, traveling the world, and purchasing things I'd like to have but just never have had the money for.
