Planes these days are strong enough to sustain most turbulence and pilots have enough time to recover the plane from virtually any spin due to the altitudes they fly at, but people still get hurt for two reasons:
a) flying around the cabin and bumping into everything
b) carry-on bags flying around and bumping into people
There have been cases of fatal or near fatal injuries due to A (mostly neck injuries), B is not as bad.
