well, despite my best efforts, the quality of the streaming video was not so hot, so i abandon my own soiree to watch it at a friend's house in HD. My apologies to anyone who showed up after i left (about 8:30).
but i hope you watched it at home! it was a great show! lots of real emotion. great camera work, looking at the right people.
the real innovation of the format was in the categories of best actress, actor, supporting actress and supporting actor - they had five former winners on stage to present the award, each of the prvious winners would name a nominee, and give a very personal assessment of the nominated performances. i wept through most of the show. :-)
all the presenters were succinct, but thoroughly articulate. lots of great humor. i missed hugh jackman's opening number, tho - hoping i can find it online, tomorrow! but hey, the show was really good. and everyone seemed to know how to dress this year! lots of fabulous dresses, including tina fey, alicia keys, jennifer anniston, anne hathaway, natalie portman, marissa tomei, reese witherspoon, sarah jessica, angelina, diane lane (hey i didn't kknow she was with josh brolin!), and of course kate looked completely amazing! i don't remember seeing anyone i didn't think looked fabulous! so many movies i can't wait to see! doubt, benjamin button, slumdog millionaire, milk, rachel getting married, australia...
and hey - once slumdog millionaire won for best sound editing, you knew it was going to win every single category it would be nominated in, including best picture, yeah?
the montages were wonderful! i particular enjoyed the one with scenes of the films nominated for best picture, inter-cut with scenes from other best picture winners. beautifully done!
i can just imagine everyone in hollywood rushing home - or to find a quiet spot - to write their coverage for the evening. or if they're lucky, getting to contemplate it for a while, to let it all sink in.
man, i love everything having to do with cinema. how is it that i am not in this industry? ;-)
