A few musings:
*Oh, NPH, I love you. And now I want a black sequined tuxedo jacket.
*I thought Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were freaking hilarious. But based on crowd reaction, I might be in the minority.
*John Hughes tribute = best excuse for an Oscar montage EVER (see icon)
*Lauren Bacall is such a badass.
*Best dress: Tie - Queen Latifah and Anna Kendrick (both of which were pink - go figure)
*I was way, way off on my picks this year - I only got 8 of the 24 right. Jason did much better - 19 of 24. He was kind of insufferable about it, too, especially when he got Best Costumes right and I didn't (there may have been a victory dance involved).
*During Kathryn Bigelow's acceptance speech for Best Director, I looked at Jason and said, "That's the director of Point Break up there", at which point we both reenacted the scene (immortalized in Hot Fuzz) where Keanu couldn't shoot Patrick Swayze and instead fired his gun into the air and screamed. And when Tom Hanks came out - Governor of the Academy, are you kidding me? - I was all, "Former star of Bosom Buddies!" and Jason fired back "Bachelor Party!" and I was all, "Turner and Hooch!". This is a follow-up to last year, when I watched Sean Penn win for Best Actor and noted, "Jeff Spicolli has an Oscar".
*I hate, hate, hate the panel presentations that they did for Best Actress and Best Actor (except Colin Farrell's part, which livened things up a bit, as Colin Farrell is wont to do). I hope they ditch that next year. I also hope they ditch the ten Best Picture nominees. Because I only got around to seeing four, which would be good in a normal year, but not this time. And even though I only saw four, I'm guessing that there are several that didn't really belong there - I mean, I read more than one review that said The Blind Side was basically just an above-average TV movie. But I'm glad Cristoph Waltz won for Best Supporting Actor - he was so, so good in Inglourious Basterds. And while I haven't seen Crazy Heart, which I've heard is very good, I still wish Jeremy Renner had won for Best Actor. We watched The Hurt Locker on DVD right before the ceremony, and he was *amazing* in it. And how cute were he and the other actors when they went up on stage for the Best Picture acceptance speech? So cute. At least as cute as the cast of Slumdog Millionaire last year, and I thought The Hurt Locker was a much better film.
I only have a week to go until Spring Break, and we are going to pick up some of the nominated films that we didn't get around to - The Last Station (hello, James McAvoy!)and Up in the Air for sure, possibly some others. We have Netflix now, so maybe we'll be better prepared for next year. We shall see.
