Leila had passed out before too many questions could be asked. When she awoke, everything was white. She was in a white room with white sheets in a white nightgown. A quick look around told her she was in a hospital, which was not a good sign. Mom was reading in an armchair, waiting.
“Mama?” she whispered, trying to make sense of it all. “Am I okay?” She couldn’t feel any pain, but she could already see the drip.
“Oh, Songbird,” Mom said, taking her hand. “You…don’t remember?” she asked. “You were taken hostage by some nasty alien and…well…you got hit by a stray beam. Baby, you shouldn’t be seeking danger. That’s why we’re tekkies, we stay in the lab where it’s safe.” Mom always knew how to make her smile. “You’ll be here for a few more days, you took a lot of energy to the chest. We were worried about you.”
Leila said nothing, but just held her mother’s hand tighter. “I…see,” she whispered. “I’m sorry for worrying everyone.”
Mom nodded. “I know, but you’re still grounded when you get home. You know you should have not let yourself stay alone with the alien. He could have killed you. If you want to study him, you should have waited till your father was with you. But don’t worry, we’ll catch the creep.”
Leila winced, as the memories passed back .”Have you caught him yet?” she asked, as she leaned back against her pillow.
Mom shook her head. “No, all the information was lost. But let us worry about that, love. You just rest and get better. We have guards posted at every entrence. You’re safe,” she said soothingly.
Leila smiled shakily. “Thanks. How are the kids?” she asked. They must be so worried about her. “I’m sorry I worried everyone.”
“I probably should get back to them. Do you need me to stay with you today? I can have Lt. Harris babysit them?” Mom asked.
“Nah, I’ll be fine. You go back and tell them I’ll be home,” Leila whispered. “I’ll be fine.” She would be, she didn’t want her family to see her like this, weak and pale. “You can come back later, I’m going to rest.”
She needed some time to think….she was still so confused.
