When I was a kid I started to notice the huge white tags on certain objects around the house. On the mattress on my bed a huge white tag, on my Dad's arm chair a huge white tag, on pillows, on the sofa...everything had those tags. Something in me wanted to rip them off but I didn't dare. I asked my Mom why those tags were on everything and why she said it was against the law for us to take them off, they had to stay on there. She pulled back the fitted sheet on my mattress and pointed to the black print on the massive white tag; "See right there it says 'Do not remove under penalty of law' that means if we take it off we're breaking the law". I asked what that meant exactly; "Does that mean we'll go to jail if we take it off?". She said; "Maybe. I don't want to find out so just don't touch it, ok?". I asked what if it just fell of on it's own and she said; "I don't know about that but I think they put it on there so it won't do that". After that I was really nervous about those tags. I wondered how the authorities would KNOW if we pulled one off? Did it have some sort of microchip in it that would send a message to the local police department if it was forcefully detached from the object it was attached to? Did it have a tracking device to our house? A tiny, microscopic hidden camera? For years those tags freaked me out.

Recently Jael and I bought a bedspread and pillow shams for the bed and there they were again...those massive white warning flags. I was, once again, taken back to my childhood where those things lurked on household objects just seeming to dare me to peel on off and risk doing some time in juvie. I took a closer look and it read; "No to be removed except by consumer". This was new. Were we now allowed to remove these? Used to be it was just "DO NOT REMOVE". Why take a chance? I'm leaving them on there.
