Buncha Papists

I am disproportionately annoyed with all the pope fangirl/fanboy love. People on my social media feeds are acting as if the man is the second coming of Jesus. Yes, he's more progressive than previous popes. But that does not change the fact that he is the head of an oppressive religion with many problems. I see him reaching out, being humble, etc. But I also see it as a bunch of lip service. Serving lunch to the homeless? Photo op at St. Paul's Cathedral!

Obviously, I can't post this on my Facebook or Twitter feeds.

I think I am personally annoyed because the church has done wrong by me. I'm annoyed on a wider level because the church has failed so, so many people. The shame, the guilt, the HYPOCRISY, and the lies have had real world consequences for me and for others. I'm a usually-tolerant ex-Catholic atheist, but the SWOONING. The reverential praise! Ugh.

So, maybe I'm being irrational, and maybe this guy will actually clean house, but I see a lot of talk and not a lot of change in church doctrine. And the one-year "forgiveness" period for those who had abortions: FUCK YOU. Your organization has contributed to the number of abortions in the world - your teachings, your doctrine.

I still don't feel as if I've gotten to the root of my anger - maybe that normally sensible people are so taken in by him? Maybe that the press is covering his every move so breathlessly? Maybe that I reject all forms of religious authority and that all of this (social media and traditional media coverage) is pushing my buttons? Probably all of the above.

Possibly, this will not be my last papal rant.
