First things first

The tornado...was not all that exciting after all. Sorry if I built up any anticipation!

I guess it wasn't even officially a tornado, though a witness (my daughter's boyfriend) says it was a circular-moving cloud that randomly destroyed things in a narrow path. Kinda sounds like a tornado, doesn't it?

Whatever it was, it uprooted some trees, ripped the roof off a local greenhouse, and destroyed the high school dugout and storage shed. Electricity was out in the area in some places. The weather ended up being weird that whole day because, after the high wind storm, the sun came out. Rick and I went out to dinner after my shift in the tasting room, and when we came out of the restaurant, the light was really weird and yellow. And I guess there was a double rainbow around, too, but I didn't see that.

Had a decent weekend. Saturday's weather was better than Sunday's, but I didn't get out until later in the afternoon because I was waiting around for Monica to call. Not a big deal as I was able to get the sunporch cleaned off -- a job I've had on my list for a LONG time. Of course now I have (neat!) piles of stuff in my living room waiting to be donated or freecycled, but I intend to make a dent in that tonight.

I got part of the lawn mowed on Saturday afternoon, too.

Yesterday was a pretty nice Mother's Day. I got up early and FINALLY rode my damn bike around the (5.3 mile) block. And there was a 15 mph wind in my face much of the time. I am awesome!!1! Got back and ate breakfast that hubby had thoughtfully made, got in the hot tub and all that, and then the kid phone calls began. Sally called from Africa -- the first time we've heard her voice since she left back in February, then Linds called, then Monica came over with some flowers and a card, and then Mike called. I also called Mom and talked to her awhile. My card didn't make it on time (DRAT!). We had a wienie roast for dinner with Linds and Rom -- they brought potato salad.

I'm excited about this week for a few reasons. It's finals week, so the kids and faculty will be mostly off campus after this week. It's Bike to Work Week in my local area, and I'm actually going to participate! I'm planning to bike in on Wednesday (more on this in a bit). Finally, I have Friday off and Linds and I are going to see Mike for the weekend. We're going to spend Saturday in NYC, probably mostly Manhattan. Linds has never been in NYC.

So, biking to work. I've never done it before. All I know is that when I got back from my bike ride on Sunday morning, Rick kept asking me if I was ok, because I was all red-faced and sweaty. Duh, I had just ridden my bike more than 5 miles! BUT. I don't want to look like a total wreck when I get to work! So this is what I have planned so far:

  1. Take Wednesday's work clothes (a sundress and sandals) and food into work on Tuesday.
  2. Assemble a makeup kit to keep at work. Something like this, plus tubes of foundation and mascara, should do it.
  3. Take dry shampoo, some kind of shower wipes (do such things exist?), deodorant, body spray, and a towel to work on Tuesday.
  4. Bring small fan to work on Tuesday.
  5. Bring plastic bag (for sweaty towel/clothes) and Febreze to work on Tuesday.
  6. Make sure snacks/water consumption are appropriate for a 6-mile ride on either end of the day.
  7. Buy a new bike seat so buttocks don't hurt! :)

Am I forgetting anything crucial? My goal is to be riding to work at least 3 times a week by June and continue through August. I'm not sure what to do about my hair. I really think it's important to wear a helmet, but my hair is going to look like crap. Maybe I'll slick it back or something. It's in that short, asymmetrical wedge cut now (yes, I got tired of growing it out).

I have not read LJ in AGES, so I hope things are well for you, my friends. Stop by a drop me a quick hello/recap of your happenings if you like. Hopefully I'll get a moment to get caught up.
