Speak up -- a new weight loss/alli/body image filter

Jul 11, 2007 15:45

Nobody has really commented when I've talked about my weight loss efforts or body image issues, which leads me to believe that some may not want to hear about it. If you don't, please leave a comment and I'll filter you out of those posts.

I bought the alli at Walmart yesterday and will start taking them on Saturday.

alli, weight

No apology necessary -- I just didn't want to prattle on about this stuff if there are people who don't want to hear about it.

What are you doing as far as working out? I've been walking 1.5 miles in about 25 minutes on my lunch break at work and going to Curves 3X/week. I keep saying that I'm going to add an extra 1/2 hour of cardio on the days I don't go to Curves (with a day of rest in there somewhere), but I haven't gotten motivated enough to do it yet...

:) cool. and it sounds like you're doing great.

i'm walking with a friend for an hour a day and i started back on these tapes i've used successfully in the past, "Power 90" from Beach Body. i got them through some infomercial yyyears ago now. they rock. i've been eating red meat once a month only and have changed my portion sizes making the tuna or chicken the tiniest portion and salads, veggies and fruit the largest portions.

...but i have a crazy sweet tooth and i'm not doing well on that count! grrr. i go back and forth with the motivation over all.

LOVE your icon. Love it!

Wow, I am in awe of your exercise regimen! Through our suck-ass cable company, we get FitTV (Exercise on Demand) for free, and I STILL haven't been able to motivate myself to get crackin'.

I'll see your sweet tooth and raise you a peanut butter addiction. The combination, while tasty, does nothing to remove the pouch on my stomach. :(

Actually, I've been reading your weight loss pursuits with interest...as I am losing myself, albeit SOOOOOO SOOOOO slowly (we're talking a pound a month, if I'm lucky). I'm very interested to here how things go with Alli. That whole "leakage" issue scares me a bit. I'd like to stay posted. (And I do wish you TONS of luck. But you really shouldn't be distressed. You've done so well.)

Thanks for your encouragement! I think my distress comes from the fact that I'm right on the cusp of being overweight. I don't mind having a 3-5 lb. "cushion" to help me keep on track, but I don't want to tip into "overweight" if I gain 3-5 lbs., and that's what's happening now.

Good for you for losing weight, too! Please update one of these days -- I miss hearing about your life!

Re: "leakage" - yeah, I'm not thrilled about that either. All of the literature makes it sound as if the "treatment effects" are only an issue if you exceed your fat percentage in meals where you've taken alli. But I want to read the research myself, and of course there's always a chance for the side effects even if you do everything right. That's why I'm starting on a weekend...

Awesome -- well, you get a lot of exercise in biking and golfing, don't you? I bought a (cheap) bike over a month ago and still don't have the seat adjusted so I can actually ride the damn thing (not that I've had time since then to start riding).

Oh, and off topic -- I finally took "my" sewing machine out of the box last night. It's a Brother -- one of the more basic models. My stepdaughter sews and she was pleased that I asked if she would be willing to help me out. I'm thinking of starting with this pattern: http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=5260 and this one: http://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4036 -- am I on track?

Yes! I'd say start with the skirt pattern. A zipper can sometimes be futzy if you haven't done one before (just remember to pin well - note: make sure the head of the pins are facing away from the foot), but if any of those blinds want you to sew the cords in that can be a bit more nerve wracking, especially on your first go.

If you have any questions ongoing, I'll be happy to help you out if I can. :)

Thanks for your advice and offer of help! I've ordered the patterns and will let you know how it goes.

I think people often don't know what to say, other than the tired old "good luck" or "good job", whatever. Weight loss and body image are so personal, and no one wants to take the slightest chance of offending. Maybe that could account for the sparsity of comments.

I'm curious - what IS alli? And what does it cause to "leak"??

Oh my -- you haven't heard anything about alli? Here are a couple of links:
http://www.myalli.com/howdoesitwork.aspx
http://www.myalli.com/howdoesitwork/treatmenteffects.aspx

Not very pleasant, but everything I've read suggests that you run a higher risk of experiencing the treatment effects if you exceed your fat limitation in meals during which you took alli. I'm starting on Saturday so I'll be close to a bathroom and (sorry if this is TMI) wearing a panty liner. I recognize that I could still get treatment effects, but I'm going to try it and make a decision based on what I experience.
