Poor Athena. I suppose it was only a matter of time. It was a relic even when I bought it used-the 500 MHz Power Mac G4 was incredible in its day, but it’s been a long time since then. I didn’t have a lot of money when I bought it, but I needed something that would work even for a little while. Apparently it wasn’t long enough. And by the looks of things, its replacement is still a long time coming.
It powers up, but there’s no startup chime and no video. I’ve reset everything that can be reset. No dice.
My data is probably all right-it’s just a hard drive pull away. And in the unlikely event that the drive is toast too, I've made backups. Not too worried about that.
And I still have working machines. Prometheus is still kicking-knock on wood-but it crashed and burned not too long ago, and I’m keeping an eye on it. Then there’s Daphne, the little iMac G3 I’m using now. As long as I stick to the most basic of tasks-internet browsing and word processing, but not much else-it’s fine. Both of these are museum pieces too. It’s a miracle they’ve lasted as long as they have, but I’m not expecting much more.
So many things falling apart right now. This just adds insult to injury.
Trying to stay positive. One day, I’ll have something new and shiny with a proper warranty! No more of this incessant tinkering with second-hand rubbish. I’m over it. I just want something that works, and I want to get on with my life.
