X-Men: Days of Future Past Post Credits Bit

Jul 06, 2014 23:17

I know a whole (actually quite long) post is a bit much for a 1 minute 33 clip, but there are reasons.

My first thought was "that looks like Jean.  What's Jean doing in Ancient Egypt?"  And then I heard the chant and I knew who it was.  I just went *squee*.  Because OMG!!! They're doing Age of Apocalypse, and it and DOFP were the two big stories at the height of my comics geekiness.

And then there was the shot of the 4 Horsemen and I may have squeaked even harder.

So my friend N (of several of my fannish Doctor Who stories and one of the comics people I hung out with) didn't know there was a post-credits bit, and was asking on Facebook if it was worth tracking down so a bunch of us said yes.  His eventual reply was just several repetitions of "En Sabah Nur".  To which we replied with the same.  It was so nice to be part of the general squee.

My theory, based on them doing a Gambit movie, is that Gambit will make that mistake he makes and join Apocalypse as one of the Horsemen for his usual reason and the others have to stop Apocalypse and their friend.  That's why I'm a bit eek! about them casting Channing Tatum because I don't know if he can do that scene that's basically "I know this is bad but it is the least worst option, because if I do this Apocalypse will not hurt the ones I love."  And that scene is so very Gambit.  And I love him for it, and understand it, even while going "no, don't believe Apocalypse, because he lies."  I can't see them having it be Wolverine that turns into a Horseman because he's very much the viewer's entry character and Apocalypse is the one guy I don't think even Erik would try to use in a "stop humans from killing us".  I want to believe that last sentence so much.

I can't see any other reason why they'd do the Gambit film first.

My theory is because Wolverine is one of the few characters they'll find very difficult to recast, and those are the last two big stories they haven't done yet (them not doing the Phoenix Saga properly is a separate issue), and Hugh Jackman is getting a little older and keeping the kind of body that leads to him being called Hugh Jacked-Man gets harder the older you get.  I'm quite pleased that they're actually letting him age now (as well as it being a good "when sign" for DOFP).

Also, on the topic of Hugh Jackman's body, it's a wonderful teaching aid, because one of my male friends was all "that body is impossible, ridiculous Hollywood standards etc", and I just said that that was exactly what all the women he'd known were complaining about when it came to models and Hollywood actresses, and he said [paraphrased], "oh, so *that's* what you meant."  I thought we'd been reasonably clear but ... at least it's finally got through.
