So, in preparation for the imminent Ikea trip with
geowench after the Caddo Conference, I have been shopping the website in pursuit of my future purchases. There are actually pieces of furniture that I will need when I move this summer. First and most importantly, a desk. The Soon to be Ex-Husband wants his desk back. So I found
www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19865629 that I fancy. More than likely whatever I get will have to go in the middle of the library room and also function as my craft/sewing table. This one is extra long and has plenty of storage. It also comes in a little smaller version with only one side of drawers. However, both options are white. This.Is.A.Problem. I dislike the color white on pretty much anything. Especially furniture. So then at Target I found this:
www.target.com/Adams-Craft-Tabletop-Soft-Black/dp/B000EPXFBW/ref=sc_qi_detailbutton. But then, once you read the description, you realize that all you're getting is the table top. The bookshelf sides come separately at $200 a piece. So the entire doo hickey would cost $559.99. So then I started wondering how I could make that desk myself. It would involve finding bookshelves small enough and sturdy enough. And then some sort of top. And then I'd have to stain it all to match each other. (So far we're still in the realm of Things I Can Actually Do). Then all of it would have to be nailed together. This part I would probably have to call in a friend so as to protect the integrity of my hands. (I don't particularly want nails through them). And if there had to be any trimming of any wooden parts, well, the whole thing's off. So anyway. That's dilemma Number One.
Number 2 is that I will require several more bookshelves, as the Ex-Asshole nailed all my other ones to the wall, ensuring that he got to keep them for his mediocre book collection. Theoretically I can just buy more of the exact bookshelves at Target. However, once again, Ikea has some awesome options. Including a corner bookshelf. I don't know if it would match with the ones I already own. I'm also not sure I care. So I might end up coming home with a few corner shelves.
Number 3 is a coffee table. I have a coffee table that I bought at the Salvation Army for 25 bucks. It is scratched to hell, the drawers barely want to work, and is the wrong color. I could probably fix all of these things myself for under $50. So we'll see.
Number 4 is a tv stand. Right now I'm using my sister's old coffee table, which she wants back when I move. So I want something with cabinets to hide my dvds and cds, as well as some open storage for "displayables". Once again, both Ikea and Target have MANY options that I covet. This I am a little overwhelmed by.
And number 5 is this:
www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30097109 . I have a thing about rugs. And I've been coveting this one for about 2 years now. I have no idea where it would go, but gods damn it I want it.
So yeah. I'm not even looking for a new place to live yet, what with school and all. I won't be looking until mid-May. So I have no idea how much space I'll have, what the layout will be, etc. But I'm already gearing up for decorating.
Sigh.
I wish I had carpentry skills and could just build everything I want by myself.
Also, I haven't checked the rest of the neato furniture stores around here. So it might be that what I want awaits just around the corner.
In other news, some things I've learned about quilting:
1. It helps to have a basic grasp of geometry.
2. I really need to invest in a sewing machine; I cannot hand sew in a straight line to save my soul.
3. Quilting while drunk results in the next day spent ripping out seams. All of them.
4. Buying every fabric that appeals to you does not result in a great quilt design.
I know it will be awhile and several quilts before I actually make something somewhat decent. But damn this is frustrating! My grandmother made it seem so easy! Right now I'm just making really small one block wall hangings for practice. So everyone should brace themselves to be gifted with my er, creations. Just smile and say Pretty! dammit.
Also in other news, the pneumonia is finally on its way out. As of yesterday my lungs sounded clear to my doctor. I feel much better. Enough that I'm planning shopping trips....
