Character name: Oswald
Fandom: Odin Sphere
Timeline: During Armageddon; battle with Leventhan has ended. He's transformed to save Gwendolyn as she falls
Age: Unknown really, but he's just late-teens maybe just over twenty
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Oswald is one of the most feared people in Erion, the world where Odin Sphere takes place. He's nicknamed 'The Shadow Knight' and is known to have a fearsome sword called the Belderiver. This sword is tipped with a special red crystal known as a psypher which absorbs souls of the deceased, but wielding it, Oswald's soul has been sold to the Queen of the Netherworld, Odette. How much power he has depends on how much she'll give him. Despite this, as long as he holds the Belderiver, none of her Shinigami (Halja) will approach him unless directly ordered as Oswald can defeat them easily. With the Belderiver as well, Oswald can transform into a dark shadow beast that appears consumed by black flames. This form increases his strength and speed as well as making him almost impervious to damage. HOWEVER, the more times this ability is used, the higher the chances Oswald will lose himself and becomes a lost spirit known as a Revenant which absolutely no memory of himself.
Besides the pros and cons of owning this cursed sword, there are also the magical abilities that can be used after the Psypher is strong enough. The list of abilities are as follows:
• Invisible -
As name says, this ability makes Oswald invisible. He can't be attacked like this, but at the same time, he can't attack. It's generally used as a time just to recover health. It wears off after some time.
• Phozon Burst -
With a high number of phozons, a powerful burst of energy is released up to a small radius. It can hit multiple enemies for a high volume of damage.
• Phozon Release -
Again, as name says. It releases a small number of Phozons. The ability is commonly used in game for growing seeds (at least, that's the only reason I use it).
• Psypher Heal -
Releasing a collection of Phozons, this ability heals any damage Oswald has been given as long as he remains still. The second he moves or is hit, the healing stops.
• Cyclone -
Using more phozon energy, a cyclone can be created that will damage all in its path... even Oswald should he accidentally get hit by it (seriously, it's annoying).
• Overload -
A high volume of phozon energy is released to double Oswald's attack power only for a limited time.
Beyond the abilities bestowed by the Belderiver, Oswald is still a knight to contend with. Even with all the armor he wears, he's one of the faster playable characters in Odin Sphere and the strongest out of them. Strangely, he also can jump quite the distance and cover half the map with a single bound. Same with the other characters, he can also use Alchemy to make various potions and concoctions to help out in battle.
(Phozon: The term used for life energy in Odin Sphere. Everything in Erion has Phozons. Fairies specifically need Phozons to live. Psyphers absorb phozons and become stronger when more are collected)
How would they use their abilities?: He would definitely use his abilities the moment he's threatened. He takes no chances and hates being double crossed or used. Outside of killing others, he would use his abilities for physical missions and most likely to vent his frustration should he receive a more laid back job.
Appearance: Standing at around 5' 9" and mostly seen garbed in his black armor, Oswald has wild, wind-swept, white-grey hair and an overall light tan complexion. His eyes are a striking ruby red and his right eye glows brighter than his left, especially when he transforms.
When he transforms into his shadow form, his whole body seems to be covered in black flames, but one glowing red eye can be seen from the mass. His speed, attack strength, and leaping prowess are heightened and he seems almost invulnerable to pain.
Outside of his armor, he dresses casually, wearing a loose white dress shirt and dark pants, but he'll most likely never walk around Thor without his armor on.
Background:
Basically, a summary of Oswald’s story ‘The Black Sword’:
Adopted by the Vanir when he was ‘abandoned’ as an infant, Oswald was raised by Melvin to be a tool of destruction. It was only when he was of age did he receive the cursed Belderiver and show its full power by slaying the wise dragon Hindel several years later. That whole time, Oswald never learned that his soul was given to the Queen of the Netherworld in exchange for his new powers or the threat against his life using it. All he cared about was being able to serve his adoptive father and make him happy. Unfortunately, after a confrontation with the Halja, Oswald begins to question what he means to Melvin.
Following a failed uprising after Queen Elfaria’s death against her daughter Mercedes, he learns the truth as Melvin died. Melvin didn’t care for him so long as he had power. Oswald doesn’t fight back as the Halja take him to the Netherworld, sinking into despair, but the sudden image of a blue bird in the darkness allows him some hope. Following the bird, he confronts the Queen Odette. Immediately, he attacks the Netherworld Queen only to quickly find nothing worked. Since his powers come directly from her, it was no surprise, but she spares him anyway only as long as he uses his powers to fight for her. Reluctantly, he goes along with the deal, attacking an intruder who has been stealing crystals (Phozon Crystals (the basis for Psypher Crystals)) from the Netherworld. The intruder is actually the Demon Lord Odin and by offering to take Oswald out of the Netherworld is he only spared.
Odin tries to use Oswald at this point to get the Ring Titrel (a ring able to control a powerful cauldron) by sending him to fight Wagner. The only reason Odin cannot retrieve the ring is because he cannot kill Wagner (he received some of the dragon’s blood in order to use magic). Even after being offered a castle and a psypher spear, Oswald wouldn’t accept the task. Only when Odin offered his daughter’s hand does Oswald accept.
(Side note: Odin Sphere is broken into seven stories, the first one being Valkyrie. The main character of the book is Gwendolyn, Odin’s Youngest Daughter. At this point in her book, Gwendolyn has been put into an enchanted sleep. Oswald, in his own book, has only seen her twice: once on a mission to spy on the Aesir and the other time on the battlefield. He spared her life… you could say he had some inkling of a crush on her. Another thing to note is the time in which this whole game is set. When Odin offered Gwendolyn’s hand, he does mean in marriage.
I don’t think there was some ceremony to make the union official… Odin just declared them married and ta-da. Video game logic...)
With little difficultly, Wagner is slain and the ring recovered, but Oswald doesn’t give Odin the ring. He had only asked Oswald to kill Wagner; there had been no mention of a ‘ring’ to bring back. Annoyed, Odin still gives Oswald everything he promised. It’s only after this that Oswald finds out his ‘wife’ Gwendolyn had been placed in a magical slumber. Learning that she would be forced to love him should he awaken her, he prepared to find another way to break the spell only to be ambushed by the wizard Skuldi. He takes Gwendolyn to the Fire King, hoping to start a war between the Fire Kingdom and the Aesir.
Oswald confronts the wizard in Titania and kills him for using Gwendolyn as a tool before hurrying to the Fire Kingdom. He fights King Onyx (I just realized how many people have O’s in their name) for Gwendolyn. He doesn’t kill the King, but does feel somewhat guilty when he learns Oynx has feelings for her (he also learns that Gwendolyn wouldn’t be forced to love him. There’s no spell capable of controlling her emotions). To make up for the incident, Oswald offers to serve Oynx once for any task he may need handled. Steamed, but out of options, Oynx accepts the deal.
Returning to the Castle, Oswald is still a bit hesitant to awaken Gwendolyn fearing she might run away, but decides he would rather see her awake and able to smile.
(Technically, Oswald’s book ends the moment he kisses Gwendolyn. Everything that happens next is covered in her book. She scorns being married to him, but because she’s under a ‘spell’, she has to stay with him. He gives her the Ring Titrel before heading off to help Oynx with a small dragon problem. She, in turn, takes the ring to Odin who expected this. Odin tells her that Oswald really just fought for her, not caring about anything else. She begins to regret her actions. Everything crashes together when, after saving Oswald in the Fire Kingdom, he learns what she has done. He gets taken back to the Netherworld, rescued again by Gwendolyn (who kills Odette), and they both finally settle down to confess their love properly.)
Fate comes in a full circle when the world starts going to Hell. (Literally; the Netherworld dwellers arise, the land is falling apart, and the Fire Kingdom starts burning down the forests to escape the rising ocean.) Oswald and Gwendolyn are separated and have to fight for survival. He arrives in Titania to find it crumbling and the undead King Gallon leading the Netherworld’s legions. It seems impossible that Oswald will be able to win as a prophecy states one with Odette’s powers and of royal blood will be able to kill Gallon. However, Oswald does come out victorious. The dying King asks for his father’s name and Oswald tells him it was Edgar. Gallon is shocked. Edgar had been next in line to be King of Titania, but he fell in love with a peasant woman and refused to marry another. King Gallon banished Edgar from the kingdom and sent assassins to kill the family in the night. Oswald had been rescued, not abandoned at all. As Gallon dies, Oswald wonders why exactly Melvin had saved him, but then decides to think about this later. With Titania sinking, Oswald rushes off to find Gwendolyn in the chaos of Armageddon.
He was previously aboard the SS Thor and made very few 'friends' out of his small number of acquaintances. Still, he was transported back to Erion after a while and returned in time to see the Last Dragon, Leventhan, awaken and begin to destroy the land. Without the ability to fly, Oswald couldn't do anything, but watch as Gwendolyn flew into battle with the monster instead. She is successful defeating Leventhan, but her wings are destroyed in the process. In an attempt to save her, Oswald transformed into his Shadow form and leapt into the sky...
... and now he's back on Thor in his Shadow form.
Personality: Prior to marrying Gwendolyn, Oswald comes off as a cruel, depressed, and very aggressive individual, all of which are most likely side effects of dealing with his life as a warrior and the curse of the Belderiver. He shows no respect to anyone other than Melvin in the beginning, going so far as to planning to kill Mercedes on his own and insulting Hindel and Wagner by calling them ‘lizards’. Acting as such, he hides that he truly wants those he cares about to love him back, hating to be used as a puppet. In battle, he does know when enough is enough, but that could have been him showing mercy just to Gwendolyn.
After his marriage, his personality has lightened a bit and he gives people the benefit of the doubt... once. Betrayal is still a sour note and he definitely does not mind hunting down anyone to get revenge should they cross him. Still, he'll try getting to know people, but once he hates someone, there's a very low chance of coming off his hit list. Also, teasing/insulting/threatening his wife would be a very unwise thing to do. Though, if you want to die, it's a sure fire way to have Oswald wring your neck.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes I have. FlamingFerret is main means of communication, mooch, work, or steal for money... jobs every month, payment starts low and builds up, etc... and Vogons should never read you poetry.
1st person sample:
[At first, it’s too dark to see anything on the screen, but then red eyes glare into view.]
What manner of magic is this?
[He peers around for a second before looking back. A little more light reveals blood on his cheek]
I have rid of those monsters that attacked me, but I don’t understand. ‘Tis not the battlefield… and Gallon’s rotten stench still clings to my armor as though our fight was recent. Were those beasts working under the Halja? Pathetic… how did they catch me?
[A small pause]
… If not the Netherworld, then where am I? I must return. Gwendolyn is fighting Leventhan; she needs help.
[No more. The feed cuts off.]
3rd person sample:
It was much more carnage than compared to the Cauldron War not too long ago. The bodies strewed in the crumbling streets of Titania were already festering, feasted upon by the monstrosities from the Netherworld. Fortunately, the smell was nothing new to him. After his brief stay in the Underworld, what would be stomach churning to another was nothing unusual to him. However, there was something that made his clench jaw immediately.
The foul creature lumbered from the distance towards him as he held his ground, his grip tight on the Belderiver’s hilt. It appeared to be some undead beast with three heads, its rotten body both falling apart and repairing at the same time. Oswald had to keep himself from transforming; it was too soon.
This disgusting thing had to be stopped before--- “I sensed something vile…”
… Shocker; the damnable beast could speak…
“Greedy fool, did you gain your power by selling your soul to that woman? That same power of death continues to torment me…”
He scowled as the undead monster shuttered, its bones rattling and exposed muscles contracting for a minute. He took a few steps forward, his body tense should it attack as he spoke.
“Though the Queen is no more, who’re you to lead the Halja?”
Less than a few feet away now and again, his opponent quivered as its rotten flesh mended only to peel off again as it spoke.
“Gallon, King of Titania. You have no right to address me.”
Oswald’s brow twitched. The undead king was full of himself. Still…
“Your body… That must be what happens to one who gives up his soul.”
His future fate then; horrifying, but now wasn’t the time. Oswald held his ground as Gallon pounded closer, empty eyes gazing down at him.
“Ah, Odette… how frightening… My heart is full of dread. Even her shadow scares me.”
Oswald crouched, glaring up at Gallon, his eye starting to glow. At least they had the same opinion of the murdered Queen, but it didn’t matter. The time for talk was over.
“I cannot allow your corpse to fester in this world any longer. I’ll send you back to Hell.”
”`Tis the end… This is Hell’s new home. The prophecies say you are my servant now. They also say I cannot be defeated by you.”
“What?!”
How could that be? And this creature’s servant? Ha, he would laugh if the situation wasn’t so grave.
”There is a royal secret… The only one to kill me… is someone of royal blood. So the prophecy state… Even if you are the shadow, a common warrior like you will never be able to kill me!”
Gallon lunged forward, rotted fangs snapping at the air as Oswald avoided the attack. Despite what the King said, Oswald wasn’t going to give in now. He charged forward to engage Gallon in the impossible battle.
Questions?: Can he stay with Gwendolyn? Or force his way to stay with her lol?
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Oh hell yes. *thumbs up*
