ARCADE FIRE
I liked them before they were cool. And I'm not just saying that to be a pretentious dick, I picked up their (beautifully produced) EP after hearing them on CBC Radio 2 (probably DNTO or Q) and scribbling down their name. That EP will sound frivolous now, but it was the only music of its kind I had ever heard. I didn't realize they were cool at all until high school. So I guess I was indie before I knew there was such a thing? They basically define the Canadian Indie scene to overseas listeners, from what I've heard, and I think it's really amazing that most of them aren't even from Canada but have come to represent themselves as Canadians. Their lyrics are haunting and every song sounds like it really means something to the people playing it, alternating between grand and epic and quiet and personal. If nothing else, that first album will always remind me of a certain point in my life and certain songs will always bring tears to my eyes. I don't know anybody who doesn't know Arcade Fire, but just in case.

last.fm Something filled up my heart with nothing someone told me not to cry.
Now that I'm older my heart's colder and I can't see that it's alive.
Children wake up! Hold your mistake up! Before they turn the summer into dust.
If the children don't grow up our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.
We're just a million little gods causing rain storms turning every good thing to rust.
I guess we'll just have to adjust.
With my lightning bolts a-glowing I can see where I am going
to be when the reaper he touches my hand.
With my lightning bolts a-glowing I can see where I am going.

(I don't know how shitty these files are, I ripped them myself a long time ago so they might have that annoying iTunes lock thing? Let me know.)
