Fandom is endlessly fascinating, and not just cause of the porn.

Taking a break from surgery recovery which is basically me curled up, semi-doped on percosets, with a heating pad thinking, one day soon, eating won't sound like a horrid proposition.

Anyhow, so, yeah, I totally signed up for ALL THE THINGS. And DJ is gonna fucking kill me. And I have like three new fandoms, now. So, wow.

The thing I wanted to post about was a funny little thing I noticed. So, when you join a new fandom and find your new pairing/s and you go on that couple week long binge of reading like ALL THE FICS and gorge yourself on all the awesome and stuff....I think it's really fascinating to learn the cosmology of it all, for lack of a better term. Yanno? Which ships are popular...which kinks...and when it comes to pairings, it's even more interesting. You learn how fandom collectively tends to view stuff...who tops/bottoms more often, who has which kink/s, who pines...and all sorts of interesting relationship dynamics. Like who adores whom more and in what way...

I think it's especially interesting this time around because I'm looking at Captain America/Iron Man and Arthur/Merlin, for the most part. And their canon dynamics are fucking fascinating. (I also ship Lewis/Hathaway, but the fandom is far, far smaller...and most fics rightly have a deliciously pining James. le sigh)

And then there's that point when you're in this new-fandom gorge fest when you get a craving for a certain type of fic or dynamic. You've read it maybe once or a bunch, but you find the thing you like and then you just want more of it. And sometimes you find something and you're like...and so that happened. Let's not redo that. (Dom!Merlin hits this for me, sorry. lol. Also Dark!Steve, which is just wrong.)

btw, I must confess I find the Omegaverse stuff fascinating, yet really hilarious as a mpreg fan for like...ever. Mpreg alone=weird. Mpreg+knotting+gender twists+scent kink+forced bonding+heat cycles+dub-con=perfectly normal, bring it on.

So, yes, I'm basically admitting I find the meta-sociological aspect of fandom culture fandom.

Though, I'll admit to being surprised by the relatively small pool of Arthur/Merlin D/s fics.

I was prepared for a lot more fics where Arthur bullies Merlin in bed than I found. My life is filled with sad.

Anyhow, yeah, so ever go into a new fandom pool and get surprised by what's hot/not? Or by the fandom cliche trends/characterization trends? Because now I'm curious if I'm the only one that thinks in "trends" and "percentages" when it comes to how fics tend to be...?

fic talk, rambling, meta
