Elise was prepared for awkward conversation. She had told Father that she'd done Jackson a favor and he wanted to take her out, but she'd skirted around actually mentioning he'd suggested Boston.

Of course, she also hadn't said that she'd found the GPS in her cellphone. She'd left it alone, merely replacing the battery like she'd meant to. She didn' ( Read more... )

Rippner was slightly tense. His court date was in less than a week. Granted, he had a good lawyer. Elise had hooked him up with a marvelous lawyer, but all the evidence was against him. Without a doubt, Lisa would testify at the trial. Her father and Keefe would probably testify. He didn't have any evidence in his favor. Jail time was a definite possibility. His only hope was that there would be a small amount of time in jail and a ton of community service ( ... )

Elise Crane was dressed in a suit, though even the professional look and her rigid posture didn't disguise her age. Yes, she mentioned she was in university, but she had left out the part about being a prodigy, about being only sixteen. After all, there hadn't been need to say it, or so she told herself. She smiled slightly, though the expression seemed almost strained, standing up when he came forward, offering her hand.

"Father had a bit of work to catch up on, but he should be here very soon. Please, have a seat."

She sat back down, her features loosening. She wasn't quite frowning, but there wasn't a smile either. Her normal expression, it seemed, was one of neutrality. Not that she was disinterested. Her eyes were focused on him, seemingly noting the small details.

"Thank you for coming," she added.

Dr. Crane entered the cafe, a look of annoyance on his normally calm features. He'd had a few unexpected difficulties in the past few days - nothing that couldn't be wrapped up quickly, but nettling all the same.

He was less than pleased to notice the man with his face sitting across from Elise. What was the girl playing at now? He'd thought they'd reached a clear understanding, but this caused him to wonder.

Composing himself, he slid into his regular seat, and beckoned a server for his usual tea. Folding his hands, he waited for one or the other of the younger people to speak.

Elise looked at her father, nodding politely, taking it upon herself to be the first to speak. "Father, this is Jackson. Jackson, this is my father, Dr. Jonathan Crane." She took a drink of her water, calm and composed. "I believe I mentioned that an acquaintance I had done a favor for wanted to take me out," she said to her father, perfectly serene. "Jackson suggested that he meet with you first."

She took another drink of her water, perfectly aware that this was a delicate situation. She and her father had... worked several things out, but she had mentioned a previous engagement she wanted to keep. It would be rude to excuse herself from spending time with Jackson for no apparent reason, and it did sound rather nice, getting out of this city for a short while.

Crane's hand was cold, slightly clammy, and his grip was decidedly weak. "Is it, really?" He smiled, thinly, as though that were a joke. "And how do you know my Elise, Mr. Rippner?" The emphasis was on the possessive, and the question seemed aimed more at the girl.

Elise tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, cocking her head as she watched this exchange. She smiled ever so slightly, almost amused, and looked at her father when he asked his question, but she didn't reply. Oh, she knew the question was meant for her, but it had been asked of Jackson, and she was curious to know what he'd say.

For the moment, for once, she was the one watching things unfold instead of one of the players under her father's watchful eye. Oh, she was still being closely watched, she was sure, but it was nice to not be the only person watched, the only person weighed and considered.

"Unfortunately," Rippner said, smiling at Crane. "I'm fully convinced that my parents hated me." God, it was high school all over again. He was talking to a girl's dad, trying not to make an ass of himself, and getting the slight feeling that he was failing miserably.

"Well, I was asking around for a lawyer," he said, nodding at Crane. That much was the truth. "One of my friends got into a little trouble with the law. It was something stupid, driving under the influence. He could have delt with it on his own. However, he owed me a favor, so I decided to help. Your daughter and I talked for a while and got to know each other." That part? A total lie. He didn't lie to Lisa but this? This was another story. He wasn't going to tell Crane that the lawyer was for him. However, Rippner sat, smiling smoothly, face covering up any hint of a lie.

"She really is a charming girl," he added as an afterthought.

In reply, Crane laid one of his hands atop Elise's. "Oh, she certainly is. Very precocious for her age, as well," he murmured, looking her up and down.

Turning his attention back to Rippner, he added, "We're very familiar with the occasional unfairness of what passes for law enforcement. Oh, yes, we surely are. Of course, drunk driving isn't something I approve of. Your friend ought to have been more careful."
