Elise was prepared for awkward conversation. She had told Father that she'd done Jackson a favor and he wanted to take her out, but she'd skirted around actually mentioning he'd suggested Boston.

"Well, I was asking around for a lawyer," he said, nodding at Crane. That much was the truth. "One of my friends got into a little trouble with the law. It was something stupid, driving under the influence. He could have delt with it on his own. However, he owed me a favor, so I decided to help. He wasn't going to tell Crane that the lawyer was for him. However, Rippner sat, smiling smoothly, face covering up any hint of a lie.
"She really is a charming girl," he added as an afterthought.

Turning his attention back to Rippner, he added, "We're very familiar with the occasional unfairness of what passes for law enforcement. Oh, yes, we surely are. Of course, drunk driving isn't something I approve of. Your friend ought to have been more careful."
