This is not a post. Or at least, it's not a post of the sort that I've been doing the last few days.

Instead, I'd just like to thank those who have expressed their enjoyment of the posts I've been making. I feel a bit weird responding to them individually. It sort of feels like saying, "well, yes, my thoughts are terrifically interesting, and I ( Read more... )

My reasons for not being religious/believing in God are theological, not political (i.e. in opposition to sexism or homophobia) or ethical (I think my religion's morals are unacceptable-I don't think that).* But I have somewhere between "no" and "very little" problem with what you seem to be advocating in terms of human behavior, even if I would, ah, characterize certain aspects of it differently. From a Christian perspective, how much does it matter (and feel free to interpret "matter" however you feel is appropriate) what an individual believes versus what they do?** I know I've had this discussion before, sometime a long time ago in my hometown, but probably not with someone as well-read as you.

*I briefly belonged to the Atheists community here on LJ, and it was wicked lame and stupid. The people on it were all rebellious teenagers who hated specific doctrines or practices of their own churches. That hatred was not necessarily misplaced, either, but to use those failures of human institutions as proof that God does not exist seemed a little juvenile to me.

**Obviously, even if I was religious, I'd never be a Christian, but the question isn't just about me.

That's an excellent question, clearly totally central. It will make an excellent post soon, but likely not before a few others. It needs some background material to make any bloody sense. Still, it's a good thing to build toward. Thanks!
