I went in for a drug test for my new job, and they cut my hair. Two big chunks of it, from the root. Supposedly it's not noticeable, but it was quite a lot of hair

Oh, I know. And I know it's not like drug testing is uncommon--I guess I just thought it was always a matter of peeing in a cup or something? Which I suppose is invasive in another way.
I mean, I know it's not like cutting off a bit of your hair actually hurts you--it's just the taking of part of you, even a tiny symbolic amount, that gets me. All to be sure you're not doing drugs.
I dunno, I guess I just wish we worked in a culture where we assumed the best about people until we had reason to suspect otherwise, and where a worker's person was not seen as open to assaults (even just symbolic ones) by her employer. Which I know is going overboard with the rhetoric. I know you were posting sort of tongue-in-cheek humorous. It's late, what can I say!
I'm still glad you have the job and still eager for ANYthing you tell me about it.
I've been drug tested before - it was some sort of saliva test. They made me put something between my gum and cheek for a few minutes - it was salty tasting.
Frankly, I'm used to my employers doing things that are invasive, usually minimally invasive. They could fire me for something I post online, something that has nothing to do with work. They can set rules about how long my hair is or what color I can dye it or how many piercings I can have or whether I have a visible tattoo. You don't really have bodily autonomy when you're a wage slave. When I lived in Tennessee, I could have been fired for being gay. Them's the breaks.
One the one hand, I haven't had a hard time getting a job lately, but... in theory, anyway, I refuse to do drug testing as part of a job interview. Look, either I can do the job or not; nothing I'm gonna do is a safety issue. So.... tell 'em to go fuck themselves. And not in the good way.
