GENDER ROLE FAIL
So we were watching a Thai pirate ninja fantasy movie, which was actually quite fun, even if it did have too many subplots and was a little convoluted. And there ended up being a cute inventor and a princess character I really liked who got to wear armor and hit people over the head with rocks. However, for the first 40 minutes or so of the movie, there was only one female character, a love interest, whose role seemed to be entirely encompassed by smiling and looking pretty.
When she showed up for the second time and still did not say a word, the following conversation took place:
Circe: (suspiciously) "What, the girl's not good enough for talking?"
CG: (who had watched the first part of the movie then restarted it when Thee and I showed up)
(smiling widely) "Oh no. She has lines. Just wait."
She had ONE line in the 5 scenes she was in. (In her penultimate scene she is implied-raped and killed.)
Her one line?
The wedding scene, in which she turns to her new husband, smiles sweetly and says "Now I belong to you!"
FAIL, MOVIE, FAIL.
That's it. I just wanted to share my pain with the world.
*On an entirely unrelated note, except for the fail, apparently the last time I read/commented on anyone's fic (INCLUDING THE PERSON THAT I BETA FOR) was in September. Circe fail. LJ is kind of a double edged sword- Before LJ I only commented on 10% of fic I read, but the comments were all "Here's a page and a half email of detailed reasons why your story rocks." instead of "Loved this!!! :D" Fic commenting is one of my neuroses- I feel morally bankrupt if I don't do it. Like brushing my teeth. I should probably work on that being that it's kind of compulsively crazy.
**On another entirely unrelated note, except that I was also watching it with CG and Thee, I saw a Gene Wilder movie in which he was fencing and I was immediately able to tell he actually is a fencer. Young Gene Wilder: hot AND a fencer. ::fans self::
