I'm just going to take a minute to complain about tumblr just ignore me

1. I saw Eddie Izzard last night with L2 and he was delightful as always. And super hot in his tux and heels and eyeliner. If I were looking for a romantic partner, an action transvestite is really what I'd want <3.

2. Gallifrey season 3 is getting SO GOOD I CAN'T TAKE IT. Every time I listen to an ep I take a month break in between because I get so wired listening to it. Narvin freaking killed me in Appropriation with his character stuff with Leela and Romana.

3. Agh I hate tumblr so much I am going to put my tumblr whining behind a cut.

Tumblr is bringing me downnnnn. I fully acknowledge this is where fandom has moved and nothing will change it, but it still makes me sad that it's so bad for a lot of the things I like best about fandom. I mean, I've always been a lurker and not great at fandom online interaction, so the fact that tumblr makes it near impossible to make friends is something I just shrug about since i sucked at it before anyway, and I can always talk fandom to Steel, even if they're not really in fandom anymore.

But you used to be able to have interesting conversations about meta, and hear what other people had to say, and I feel like tumblr's completely lost on that. Like, an interesting post by one person with a billion likes is not the same. And if there is any sort of actual fandom debate, it seems like the only way to actively take part (i.e. get noticed or be reblogged, because otherwise you're shouting into a void) is to pick a total hardline stance clearly on on side of a debate, that gets more and more garbled until both sides look terrible. Which is super boring. And if you want to message someone (through tumblr's terrible, no formatting messaging system) because you want to say "great point!" or "Have you considered this?") you feel like a weird stalker interjecting your way into things.

I'm not saying LJ and message boards and whatever else weren't filled with pettiness and stupid fights and wank, but at least they proceeded in a semi-logical order and it was fairly easy to follow both sides and participate, if you wanted to?

Like, say I posted in a Who themed comm, about how I kind of think in my headcanon that "the Doctor smells like honey, stardust and engine oil!", and someone disagreed with me. They could reply to my post saying "Actually, I think the Doctor smells like honey, stardust and alien spices". Then various other people from the comm could jump in with their opinions, and I could go back and forth with them. And if someone accused me of being a Doctor smell fascist who hated everyone on the other side, I could point out that my OP had nothing of the sort in it, and everyone in the thread could see that as well.

And yeah, maybe some people would go off to their blogs and post flocked posts about how the Engine Oil brigade is clearly delusional, but it'd be private so it at least has the potential for not stirring up more drama. Or maybe even some would post public posts with their 4 page meta on how the Doctor smells, but you'd be able to pretty clearly follow what was going on, and it would be really clear when someone was exaggerating/being a drama llama. And it would be separate from the main comm post, where anyone from the comm could jump in and participate, or just your friends if it was on your journal.

On the other hand, I feel on tumblr, if I made that post, there would be a lot of likes and reblogs, but then somewhere buried in the tags three pages down would be someone claiming this is totally wrong, and that "honey, stardust and alien spices" is the way to go, and then you'd get a reblog saying "Anyone who thinks 'the Doctor smells like honey, stardust and engine oil' is a BULLY, and they are bullying anyone who thinks differently, which would then devolve into a tone argument, and a discussion of which side is bringing down fandom more, and then you'd get new posts with veiled references to the original blog, saying that they've seen in all the "other" blogs (more veiled references) that the Engine Oil people have clearly stated that they are fascists who hate everyone in the Spice Brigade, and then new reblogs from the Engine Oil brigade would come along saying it's actually the other side that are fascists, and that canon supports them anyway 200% so... And then if you just stumbled onto this tried to sort through the notes to figure out where the argument started or what the heck it was actually about, you'd get a thousand little spin offs and dead ends, until you finally find the right post, and click, and the author has changed their url, sorry! No post for you!

Maybe I'm just too old for fandom now?
