Elementary 1x6 & 1x7

Nov 22, 2012 17:06

I actually have been intending to post about Elementary regularly, because it's been a while since I've watched a show from the beginning while it's actually airing, and I thought it might be interesting to see how my opinions change over the course of the season. Of course, posting about it regularly actually means posting regularly, which I've been terrible about lately. Anyway.

- The cases are still fine, but nothing special. I suck at figuring out the twists in procedurals pretty much all the time, though, so it doesn't really bother me since I'm usually surprised. And I'm mostly here for the characters, anyway.

6:
- the prank with Holmes' fake dad was pretty awful. I mean, it was just a stupid prank, but what with the sexual comments and Joan's reaction- she seemed super embarrassed and hurt- I felt more strongly about it. The weird thing is, I think Holmes was a bit hurt too. The way the "you should have trusted me" was delivered felt less to me like "because I'm always right, duh" and more like "because I sort of like you and want you to like me enough to trust me". I wonder if also part of his annoyance was that communicating with his father, from his perspective, is a reminder that she's here because it's her job, not because she likes hanging out with him and helping with cases.

However, I did like watching Joan flex her newly awakened deductive muscles to hunt his friend down, and get information out of him. Although I know they probably didn't mean it that way, I was less fond of his friend's speech that seemed to imply you needed to put up with Holmes being an asshole to you to enjoy the amazing gift of his friendship. IDK it just was phrased poorly to me.

- I thought it was cute that Holmes was sad that Watson was mad at him, and tried to make it up to her by sharing something about himself, but good on her for pointing out that it was something she already knew. I'm hoping his like for her overcomes his sense of self importance at some point. I really have no idea how they're going to make her decide to stay on where things are currently.

7:
- I liked that we saw one of Gregson's old partners with some sort of weird backstory between them and it wasn't immediately established that they dated and now it's awkward. They might go that way anyway, but it was nice to have a character that wasn't immediately a love interest. Now what we need is more Bell development, plz.

- I saw someone say that Gregson had a really thick Boston accent. Is that true? I hadn't noticed at all. I think I had assumed it was a Bronx accent. Whoops.

- I know it was stupid, but the orange throwing, and everyone's reaction to it, cracked me up.

- MY BABIES ARE FIGHTING. Their fighting, after they seemed to be becoming friends, was unreasonably sad to me. I spent the whole episode wanting them to make up so they could go back to building their beautiful bromance. Sadly, it didn't happen.

- A lot of people on tumblr seem to think Joan is super-nosy and inappropriate, and I totally disagree. Yes, if Joan was there and doing the stuff she did and she was his friend, or girlfriend, or cousin, or whatever, yes, I would think it was wrong. She is not any of those things at the moment. Her primary reason for being there is that it's her job, and her job is to keep him from becoming an addict again. So far, Sherlock has shared fuck-all with her about how he became an addict, why he became an addict, or basically anything that might help her do her job properly. All her info seems to have come from his dad, and he fights her on things designed to keep him from relapsing- like going to meetings, where we see he likes to make fun of other addicts, because he's *obviously* better than them. Basically, his main defense against relapsing seems to be his belief that he was done with drugs, so everyone should just leave him alone about that. Spoiler-alert- from my personal experience with 2 addicts, when they tell you "I'm not going to do it anymore, so you don't need to worry," and they haven't done ANYTHING else other than just say that, IT IS USUALLY NOT A TRUTHFUL STATEMENT. (In fact, with my personal experience so far, it's never been a truthful statement.)

So Joan, going out of her way to find out things related to how he became a drug addict? (Note that she wasn't just prying in general, she was pretty focused on the drugs) Knowing that it's going to make him dislike her? Awesome. A lot of people find being liked is more important to them than most other things.

It would be easy for Joan to spend the rest of the 6 weeks trying to buddy up to Holmes, just doing things that he enjoys and going through the motions to get her paycheck at the end. But she doesn't want to, because she wants to help him, and she's good at her job, as she told us. So I have a lot of respect for her for making such an effort. A+, Ms. Watson.

- I am crossing my fingers for the Irene plot being that she faked her death and he honestly thinks she is, not that he was lying to get Watson off his back. And of course, I have a lot of ways I'd love that storyline to go, but I'm not even going to bother speculating about it because there's no point.

- I am starting to wonder a bit about the timeline though. I assumed that the episodes sort of were scheduled in real time, i.e. a week between then, but we're up to 7 and there's been no indication that the 6 weeks are nearing their end. Hmm.
