Discussion: The Issue of Maria Hill's Ethnicity - Has She been Whitewashed?

Fuck you Marvel, fuck you. I'm still side eyeing you for attempting to make Nico in the Runaways movie white, (which was fixed after people made a stink about it) but I guess it's too late to call you on this. I admit I'm not really into comic book fandom much anymore, but even from the handful of Iron Man/Avengers stuff I read with Maria in it, it was pretty clear that she was intended to be Latino/African American/at the very least dark skinned Mediterranean.

Also, while I'm at it, fuck everyone saying " REVERSE RACISM- how is this any different from them making Nick Fury black???" or playing the Suzanne Collins card of "LOL we never said *explicitly* that she wasn't 100% Caucasian! :)" as well. UGH.

I'm just particularly annoyed by this because I've just really been noticing just how white my workplace is, and specifically how it's demographics completely don't match up to the demographics for the area in which I live/work. And don't get me wrong, I am one of the whitest non-white people ever, so I don't know how much right I have to complain, but it still bothers me. :P And while I'm talking about race, anyone have any recs for fantasy/sci fi books written by a POC lady with lady protagonists? (preferably POC, but any is fine) I got some good recs from feminist_geeks but more are always great.

yeah this is a problem, rl, politica
