Fic: First Lessons, GEN, G

Okay, this was a commentfic! Just a two-minute commentfic I was going to post on my lunch hour. It's all sg_fignewton's fault. That and my complete inability to drabble. *goes back to work muttering ( Read more... )

Oh, Redbyrd, lovely!

A reasonable explanation of why they didn't leave - and very much in character for Drey'auc, who later dies rather than let another die in her place. And Ry'ac really did come nicely to life here.

But - and I'm sorry, since that wasn't your intention! - Bra'tac completely took over this fic with his awesomeness. I can't say I'm sorry. It's probably not your fault; any story with Bra'tac in it is bound to be overwhelmed. :)

Lovely conversation between Ry'ac and Bra'tac. I love how Bra'tac talks to him as an adult, yet explains things clearly enough for him to understand.

One question: didn't Drey'auc actually tell Ry'ac that Teal'c was dead, not that he'd fled Chulak?

Very nice all round. And thank you for the lovely gift! :)

You're welcome *g*.

And I really don't mind Bra'tac taking over- you're perfectly right, he's terrific. (Not to mention really relieved that Ry'ac turned out to be malleable enough to go along with the secret as opposed to him being forced to do something he'd really rather not contemplate.)

Hmm- you're right, Drey'auc does tell Ry'ac that Teal'c was dead, and I should account for that somehow. *pause for quick re-edit* Okay, that's a bit better. It's really quite a challenge to write a viewpoint for a character this young. This was really probably too new to post, but it was so timely I couldn't resist! No guarantees I won't go back and edit bits of it in a day or two!

Heh. I sometimes go back and obsessively edit tiny bits of fic weeks or months after I've posted them! The fix is seamless.

BTW, aren't you on SG1 Debrief's list? Because I just did my tagging, and while my own rec for this little fic of yours showed up on the list, the fic itself did not.

Hmm? I keep meaning to check out SG1 Debrief, but I've not managed to make it over there year. So, probably not.

Well, go and sign up! It's right here: sg1_debrief. And I think you officially sign up to have your posts tagged over here; the policy has changed slightly since the beginning. Very, very, very worthwhile.

Oh you have to check it out. But even if you don't watch it, it's surprising your stuff hasn't been picked up. I gathered it was more an "opt out" than an "opt in" thing.

Basically any and everything SG-1 related on live journal in the past (week/two weeks) is linked to (unless flocked or author requested not to be on it). Con reports, announcements, when new eps were airing, reviews on that were every week. Meta posts, fics, artwork, recs, icons, etc etc show up every other week. New lists are posted every Thursday.

So basically it's just a one stop shopping to find SG-1 stuff because it's essentially a list of links. But it's a great way to find stuff.

It used to be opt out, until the watch list hit 500 journals about eight months in and my head exploded. :) And since only half those people were actually posting about SG-1, we changed it to an opt in.

Because I am apparently weird in that I never thought the darn thing would become that popular. :)

She just posted this today! How can it be showing up on the debrief? The debrief isn't up yet (and isn't it half issue week?)

Sorry. Let me clarify: I'm lucky enough to be one of the taggers for the newsletter. That means that every day or two or three, I scroll through the newsletter's friends' list and tag any posts that fall into my tagging category. Julie then rounds up all the tags from all the taggers and codes them into the newsletter - and yes, the next full issue isn't coming out until next week.

As it happens, I went off to tag right after I posted my rec for this, and while my own rec showed up quite nicely on the friends' list, Redbyrd's actual post did not. That's why I asked. And hopefully, she'll join the list so that a lot more people will get to read her fic! :)

Ah! The key bit of info.. I was just glancing at the link you posted and wondering how the links were collected. *goes off to friend the debrief list*

Oh, it's because she's not on that "don't friend this back" lj debrief dude for whatever reason. LOL. Got it! Yes, I can see if you add stuff not on that thing, it can get unwieldy (because there may be a reason it's NOT on being listed, i.e. people not wanting to be linked). Actually, I can see even if you do only use that flist to tag, it gets unwieldly. Hee. I'm always amazed at how the debrief works.

*whispers* Redbyrd could probably allow her links to be friended even if she doesn't want to sign up to receive the debrief--you're in the know of that organization, not me--even though SHE SHOULD FRIEND THE SITE REGARDLESS! */not so whispering* :-D

The debrief works because Julie is AWESOME. Really, it's as simple as that.

And if someone wanted to have their posts linked, but not have the newsletter show on their friends' list... ::shrugs:: No reason why not. Don't know why they'd want to, though. :)

I'm still confused. I signed up for sg1-debrief some time ago. When I posted a new fic and put an entry on LJ that links to the fic, no one saw it. I had to e-mail one of the organizers (she says it'll be listed next week). What else am I supposed to sign up for?

Okay, I'll try to explain this. Hopefully I won't mess up. And my apologies to Redbyrd for pre-empting the feedback on her wonderful story! (Bra'tac rocks. So does Drey'auc. And Ry'ac is delightfully personable without being annoying. There, that should do it...)

There are two aspects to SG-1 Debrief: getting the newsletter "delivered" to your flist, and getting your posts included on the newsletter's flist. The newsletter's flist is actually on a different comm entirely.

Way back when the newsletter first started, basically everyone who friended the newsletter automatically got their LJ added to the flist that is scanned for tagging purposes. You can imagine how huge the flist was at that point! As time went on, Julie stopped having the newsletter automatically friend everyone back, and started trimming the flist down to those LJs that posted about SG-1 at least once in the last four months. With that pruning accomplished, the taggers had to fight their way through a lot less irrelevancies. Although I still find myself highly ( ... )

Nope, makes perfect sense. And I'll consider it my just reward for babbling all over your canon post *g*.

And, without the explanation? This was actually not at all obvious from the info on the comm.

Very clear and helpful, really. Somehow I missed these little details when I signed up.
