I made a sweet potato pie last night. It was really good, but then this morning my dad left it on the counter when he went to help my mom scrape the ice of her windshield and, as always happens when you leave the labradoodle unattended with food, she ate all that was left of it. So far this trip she has eaten half a sweet potato pie, several bags of nuts and an entire pound cake and that's WITH us being super careful about the food within her reach.

Facts about me that this trip has reinforced (not that there was ever doubt): I am just really neither a kid person (that's another story) nor a dog person. I always feel bad when I say that, like my friends who have kids and/or dogs are going to think I dislike said kids and/or dogs, and that's almost never the case. I generally like both kids and dogs fine as long as they are someone else's responsibility, but oh wow, that last part is key.

Me and my future cats are going to be very happy together.

This trip has been pretty relaxing and great. I saw Voyage of the Dawn Treader with my family on Christmas Day and I saw HP7 pt. 1 again with my dad and brother and a NOLA friend who was out this way for the holidays the day after. The latter has left me trawling the Internet for new HP fic (and admittedly a lot is new to me because I usually mostly read H/D and I'm pretty into the idea of the trio this time around. Also, though, it is hd_holidays, which I always forget about until it's happening. Score!). The former made me reread this fic: Boys and Lipsticks over and over like I do every time I see a Narnia movie, even if it is set after The Last Battle. So short, so simple, so hurty in exactly the right way. She sleeps soundly. Why shouldn’t she? She’s young, and the war is over. Oh, Susan.

I've also read a bunch of Yuletide fics. A few recs of Yuletide stories that I was just really struck by and keep thinking about:

This Kid I Once Knew, Calvin and Hobbes - I love the pov here, and just the clear *affection* shining through the entire piece.

That'll Teach the Landlord for Saying "All Utilities Included", A Softer World - I am always a sucker for pretty language and the language here is just beautiful, but it's also perfectly in keeping with the tone and feel of the comic. Someone in the comments said, "the tone of whimsy straining to hold back the dark" and yes. That's the best thing about A Softer World and about this fic.

All About Me, Friday Night Lights - short character study of Jess Merriweather, but the characterization is spot-on and it made me cry, pretty much like the show always does. Jess was going to play for the Cowboys, QB1. Just like all the boys in Texas. Perfect. ♥ I just love Jess so much. She's probably my favorite of the new characters they introduced in the last few seasons.

Anyway, now I'm trying to get some work done since I'll be out of the office all week, and I'm trying to take it easy because my death plague relapsed, so I've now been sick for over two weeks and tomorrow I head to Florida for the wedding of one of my adolescent bffs. I really wish I had more time with my family, but I'm also pretty excited to see my girls. It's been about a year and a half, and that's just way too long. After today there's no "taking it easy" until I'm back home; there is only pushing through the pain and/or drinking until I don't notice it anymore. It will either be excellent times or it will turn this cold-that-won't-die into walking pneumonia. We'll see.
