I KNOW RIGHT? That was beyond dark, that was pitch black - but that's how I like my superhero movies too. Grace in darkness! AND THE PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER THAN THE TRUTH. Because the story/narrative that allows people to function and hope to exist is MORE IMPORTANT THAN LITERAL TRUTH. I just. *flail*
I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW. And Harvey Dent gave everything he had to a broken system - and the products of that system took it all. OH MY GOD, and then the only way to restore a little hope it to totally go outside the system and never speak of the sacrifice it takes, I just. Two-Face. Commissioner Gordon, omg. And the Joker as the embodiment of chaos, I. So many narrative kinks hit at one time.
Though Garren disagrees. MG so much better at the sly wit, clever banter needed in the Rachel Dawes relationship to Bruce Wayne. Holmes always just seemed mean and bitter.
I always find it kind of jarring when characters are recast, so part of me wishes it had still been Katie Holmes - but part of me really did like MG better in the part, for just the reasons you say.
It is jarring; I was thinking about that earlier, thinking if/when they went on to make another film, that they really CAN'T put the Joker in it. It'd create a huge uproar to recast Ledger, for so many reasons.
