Dude. When this show is on, it is on.
- I love Bela more every time she appears and I ship Bela/Dean. Sure she sold him out! But she kind of felt bad about it sorta! And he answered the phone without hesitation when she called! Twice! That's totally like foreplay.
- HOLY SHIT SAM WINCHESTER. But Dean too, actually. I mean, there's all this about Sam getting darker, but I think both of them are spiraling. The complete lack of hesitation when killing Harmony HI MERCEDES! Lucy was jarring, especially in the narrative context of Lenore and Madison (and yes, I remain not entirely comfortable with their portrayal of women), but it showed the ways they're both getting colder - its less about saving people and more about hunting things and that was made very, very clear here. Of course, it's also very much about survival because then you have the we-have-to-kill Gordon thing too and Sam agreeing to that so easily is VERY telling. But so is Dean's flippancy. Dean will always do what needs to be done to protect Sam, but even for him it should have been a bigger deal, should have been something that you do because it needs to be done - not something to joke about. I actually found Dean's reaction more startling because we have Dean there to comment on Sam's. (And of course it needed the comment. Sometimes I wish SPN would grow some subtlety).
- Nothing about Gordon Walker is not tragic. I SO DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. Before this episode, I was thinking that they better keep Gordon sympathetic. And wow, did they ever. Of course, every episode as secondary characters who parallel Sam and Dean. What's interesting is that Gordon was this episode's Sam avatar, when before he was always used to parallel Dean. Gordon BROKE me. Because he DOES so what needs to be done. And hey, if Sam's the anti-Christ? It is entirely possible GORDON WAS NOT WRONG. The scene where he killed his crazy Jesus friend was equal parts creepy and painful. I love it when SPN does tragedy and I love it when it doesn't pull emotional punches.
- And, of course, SamandDean. If I start talking about it, I'll start flailing. Sam calling Dean on his shit, all that raw emotion laid out there between them and of course Sam knows you're scared, Dean! Of course he does. Even if you don't totally know it yourself. And Dean does what Sam asks, drops the bravado. I was so sure we were headed for so much more posturing and tension and I didn' t know how much I wanted that tension relieved until it was. So well done.
- The scene with the impala = incoherent flailing on the couch. Oh, my heart. I don't even know what else to say about that.
Okay, I would like to reiterate that I support the writer's strike without hesitation, okay? But I admit that I fear what that means for SPN. If we don't see the end of this season, I might die. I AM EXAGGERATING. BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY.
