Before there was BtVS, there was The X-Files, and before there was The X-Files there was Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and before that I was seven years old and I was obsessed with a silly late-1960s gothic soap opera. Dark Shadows was not good. The writing was bad and acting was worse, and it was filmed live, so sometimes the set fell over. But they showed two episodes a day on Sci-Fi and I taped them and I watched them when I got home from school every day and I LOVED IT LIKE BURNING pretty much up until the XF obsession started when I was about twelve. (Dark Shadows had ended its run at that point and maybe started over? But anyway, I'd been out of town that summer and missed the last episode with Angelique. Which I have still not seen. I'm still not okay with that).
Oh My God.
Johnny Depp. As Barnabas Collins. Oh My God. As long as there's a good Angelique I'll be happy. I was thinking earlier about who would be good and *clearly* the first person who comes to mind is Julie Benz and it hit me in that moment that I love Darla so much because she's Angelique. It's kind of like how I love Lindsey McDonald because he's Alex Krycek and I have patterns. But this had really never occurred to me before and it really, really should have. I don't think about Dark Shadows much, but I think that loving it the way I did, when I was so young, probably influenced me a lot in the way I approach my fannish texts now - it DEFINITELY influenced the way I ship. Angelique/Barnabas = OTP FOREVER, which umm . . . would not be surprising to anyone who knows me. SO WHAT IF SHE CURSED HIM TO BE A VAMPIRE AND THEY SPENT HUNDREDS OF YEARS HATING AND TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER. PSH, I SAY. I'm sure there are people who ship Barnabas/Josette or Barnabas/Julia. NOT ME. MORALLY AMBIGUOUS IN LOVE FTW.
But Johnny Depp. Seriously. There have been two revivals that I know of -1991 and 2004 - but neither one went anywhere. A movie starring Johnny Depp? Now that could go somewhere. SQUEEE!
