Rec: Eleventh Doctor

Sep 16, 2014 21:57

I've decided to post a recommendation of a slightly different sort this week. Instead of recommending a fanwork, I'm going to recommend a TV series. Or.. well, a part of a TV Series.

This recommendation is for Doctor Who, but I'm not going to be talking about all of Who. I'm only going to tell you about the Eleventh Doctor.

Doctor Who is one of my ( Read more... )

This post started as a larger 'rec everything including fanworks post', and in its original form I had an explanation in for all the recs that read like this:

Unlike most fandoms I fall into, I have found the actual ‘fandom’ side of the Eleventh Doctor rather difficult to navigate.

You see, I want something that fandom often doesn’t provide. Essentially, I want more canon. I want more adventures, more intrigue, more mystery, more aliens, more monsters, more running about and much much more of that exasperating mad man in a box.

What I don’t really want is angst, or romance, or naval gazing character studies. (However good they are, they just don’t hit the spot… and they often are very good! Some of them are even recommended here!)

Unfortunately fandom excels at the latter, and seems to do rather poorly at the former. I have my theories as to why, but if I tried to expand on them here this post would be thousands of words longer, so I’ll leave that for another day.

Suffice to say, I have found this fandom difficult. Intractable. Sometimes even frustrating. More than once, I’ve been on the brink of giving up. But… you see, I almost give up only to be dragged back in by elisi, who writes some of the best fics, generates some of the best meta and recs some of the best works. She always drags me back in. So - if this post is dedicated to anyone, it’s dedicated to her.*

All of that is still true. One day I fully intend to realise the original intention behind this post and rec ALL the things... but for no I wanted to get this out there, so I limited my scope :)

I know I haven't commented a whole heap on your fics etc. but I'm one of those lurkers who's always wanted to say more... this is sort of how I do it.

(I only recently re-read Dating the Cleverest Boy in the World, prompted by your posting A Good Day, and was reminded of why I love your work. Trust Me (I'm a Lying Liar who Lies) and And Then The TARDIS Fell into Pete's World are definitely in my top Eleventh Doctor fics. And, as I once told you on AO3 She Can Be. She Will Be. is probably my favourite Doctor/River fic ever.

So... I'm not going to spare your blushes. I love the stuff you create, and I think pointing people in your direction is only going to be a good thing :)

I'll answer your second question in a second comment, because I feel I'll need the space!

OK, am back again.

This whole bit... I just don't know what to say. The thing is, I'd charaterise myself as definitely being on the edges of fandom. I'm not on Tumblr, or Gallifrey Base, or anywhere like that. I am very sensitive when it comes to things I love - see my endless efforts to be optimistic about everything! - so I actively avoid naysayers. The thing is, even so I can absorb stuff by osmosis, and the general 'mood' of fandom reaches me easily. (Rambling now - think I meant to comment on the 180 degree turn from 'RTD is evil, we hates him, all hail Moff!', to the opposite. I remember being pretty much a single voice admitting to enjoying RTD's stories. Where were all the RTD stans then? /tangent) Anyway, I think what I meant to say is that I actively try to be positive and look for the good things, because it seems like most of people are only there to criticise. (I adore 'The Writers Tale' with all my heart. I don't always agree with RTD, but I respect the hell out of him.) So thank you for letting me know that it makes a difference. :)

I know I haven't commented a whole heap on your fics etc. but I'm one of those lurkers who's always wanted to say more... this is sort of how I do it.

This was the point when I sort of became a speechless flailing mess. That 'verse is my baby and to know that people read and appreciate it is just... There are no words.

Trust Me (I'm a Lying Liar who Lies) and And Then The TARDIS Fell into Pete's World are definitely in my top Eleventh Doctor fics.
I had so much fun writing those! They're all such rich characters that they're an absolute joy to write. Am so very very pleased people enjoy them.

And, as I once told you on AO3 She Can Be. She Will Be. is probably my favourite Doctor/River fic ever.
I think that is the fic I'm the proudest of, of anything I've written. There are other nominees (and the whole Seeker 'verse is so much bigger of course), but that one just says everything I ever wanted to say, and still works after all this time. (I think that's one of the main reasons I love Moffat Who? You can get a feel for the shape of stories - so although I had no idea what would *actually* happen I could make an educated guess at what they were to each other - and I was right. ♥)

And hey, look at me rambling. Hope you don't mind. If there's anything I can do, just say! <3
