The nice thing about approaching it from that point of view, is it sort of frees you from having to drop huge loads of cash on things you don't really want or need. Typically, I find myself in the friendly local game store, see a model I want to work on, and try to think of how I'd like to paint it. From there I do a mental inventory of the paints, etc. I have on hand and pick up the colors I think I'll need, take it home, and go to work.
The only weird thing about that is there is a bit of a disconnect since they are "game" miniatures and having a compulsion to get them done quickly to go play the game. Which I don't play. And have never played. And likely will never play.
Once I get past that hangup, it's pretty easy to find myself in a zen state while working on them. Just relax, and let the model tell me how it wants to be painted.
TL;DR: models are nice because you don't have to invest anything you don't want to in them so long as you don't get sucked into the game part.
