Supernatural Fanmix: Ramblin' Woman

Aug 20, 2012 23:38

Title: Ramblin' Woman
Subject: girl!Dean Winchester
Length: 8 tracks
Summary: The Lord he made me a ramblin' woman
Notes: Made for waywardmixes Round Six Theme: Genderswap. This is a mix that I've wanted to make since the middle of season four, because apparently genderswap is like crack for me. A lot of the songs on here are covers of classic rock songs by female artists, because I wanted to give Deanna and this mix the same kind of rough around the edges, in love with open road, tragic American hero vibe that Dean gives off. Hopefully I've succeeded. Deanna Winchester played by Amber Heard.

"Saving people, hunting things. The family business."

Deanna Winchester is Dean with a few more rough edges and a secret, frivolous love of red lipstick. She's her brother's protector, her father's soldier. She wears the same leather jacket, swills the same whiskey and drinks the same cheap beer. She's a crack shot. She sleeps with a Bowie knife under her pillow - precaution, not paranoia. Her pride and joy and the only home she's ever known is the 1967 Impala that carried her family away from Lawrence, Kansas after the first four years of her life went up in smoke. She's the spitting image of Mary - she spent her teenage years hacking off her hair and eschewing girl's clothes because she couldn’t stand the haunted look on her dad's face when he looked at her and saw Mary staring back. She’s Sam’s big sister, the only mother he remembers, the only constant in his life. She dies for him, goes to hell for him, and comes back for him. At the end of the day, this is what you need to know about Deanna Winchester; she’s just like Dean, except more awesome.

One. Free Bird - Wynonna Judd

if I leave here tomorrow
would you still remember me
for I must be travelin' on now
there's too many places I got to see
and if I stay here with you boy
things just couldn't be the same
'cause I'm as free as a bird now
and this bird you cannot change
and this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can't change

Two. Midnight Rider - Patti Smith

well I got to run to keep from hidin’
and I’m bound to keep on ridin’
and I got one more silver dollar
I don’t own the clothes I’m wearing
and the road goes on forever
and I got one more silver dollar
well I’ve gone by the point of caring
some ol’ bed I’ll soon be sharing
and I got one more silver dollar
but I’m not gonna let ‘em catch me, no
not gonna let ‘em catch the midnight rider

Three. Lodi - Jeffrey Foucault

just about a year ago I set out on the road
seekin’ my fame and fortune, lookin’ for a pot of gold
things got bad and things got worse, I guess you know the tune
oh Lord, stuck in Lodi again

Four. Heart of Gold - Tanya Donnelly

I want to live, I want to give
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold
you keep me searching for a heart of gold
and I’m getting old
you keep me searching for a heart of gold
and I’m getting old

Five. 72 (This Highway’s Mean) - Drive-By truckers

don’t know why they even bother puttin’ this highway on the map
anybody who’s ever been on it knows exactly where they’re at
‘cause hell’s on both ends of and nowhere’s in between and this highway’s mean
this mean old highway, stuck to the ground in Mississippi it’s the one that’ll set me free
it’s the same one that I’ve seen bein’ ripped up off the ground and wrapped around me
I don’t need a map to tell me where I am today, this feeling that I have has always led the way
down here you’re runnin’ from a broken heart or to a heart that you’ve gotta break
on this mean old highway
on this mean old highway

Six. Ramblin’ (Wo)man - Cat Power

some folks, some folks might say that I'm no good
that I wouldn't settle down but if I only could
there's something I got to do before I die
now when I'm gone, when I'm gone and at my grave you stand
just say God called home your ramblin' woman

Seven. 200 More Miles - Cowboy Junkies

I’ve traveled past, traveled hard before and I’m beginning to understand
that I got 200 more miles of rain asphalt in line before I sleep
but there’ll be no warm sheets or welcoming arms to fall into tonight
Atlanta’s a distant memory, Montgomery a recent birth
and Tulsa burns on the desert floor like a signal fire

Eight. Lawrence, KS - Josh Ritter

my debts are not like prison
where there's hope of getting free
and I've been from here to Lawrence, Kansas
trying to leave my state of mind
trying to leave this awful sadness
some prophecies are self-fulfilling
but I've had to work for all of mine
better times will come to me, God willing
‘cause Lord I can't leave this world behind
