FMA: The Taken Path
Chapter 2: How they met.a/n: this the back to the beginning.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For too many long months, Edward Elric searched for a way home. Soon his months would started to turn into a year. Time passes as time does, too quickly or too slowly.
Every dead end, failed attempt, and wild goose chase weakened his hope and cracked his shield of stubbornness. He didn't even want to contemplate absolute failure. He had to keep up his hope. He was still dreaming of home and he wasn't going to stop.
Edward sighed in frustration as he kicked a baseball sized rock down the dirt road. He had been following a false lead for nearly two weeks now. And he didn't know what to do. He was completely out of ideas, options, and money. He needed supplies to repair the joint in the knee of his mechanical leg. His days were not looking up at that very moment.
Time were bad for everyone. The country was on the brink of war with the rest of the world, it seemed. No one was hiring anyone outside of their family. Blood was truly thicker than water. The people were taking care of their own first and foremost.
Stopping in the middle of the dirt road, he stuffed his hands in his pockets. Sighing once again, he tilted his head back to look up at the cheerfully clear sky. It was such a nice day for such a grim and looming future.
"Don't worry, Al, I'm coming home no matter what." he told the sky as if his words would reach his little brother's ears.
He stared at the sky for a moment, taking a few deep breaths. Allowing the muscles in his body to relax, he cleared his mind. It wasn't going to do him any good to be too worked up and strung out.
"Ahhhhrrroooooo!!!" a howl pierced through the calm air.
The sixteen year old stared in disbelief at the dark blur speeding towards the earth. The blur was the source of that howl. What the hell?!
He winced when he heard the thud of the grounded blur and saw the mushroom cloud of dirt. Fullmetal ran as fast as he could towards the incident, expecting the worst. But what he found sent him falling backwards and onto his rear end.
Wide open golden eyes stared into the small crater. He was expecting a very broken body, but that wasn't what he saw. The blur was a girl! She was probably a year or two younger, and she was completely uninjured! In fact, all she was, was a 'little' dusty and coughing up a lung or two.
Amazingly, she stood up without any trouble. She looked shorter than him, but he couldn't really tell with her being in the crater and all. Her hair was long, wild, and very dusty. When she finally looked up, her jade green eyes connected with his.
"Uh... Hi!" she chirped with a false happy smile.
"...Hi..." he said in reply, his eyes still wide open, "Um, are you all right?"
"Oh, yeah... I'm all right." her smile turned sheepish, "So, you saw that, huh."
"Uh huh."
"O..kay...then... The name's Ryn Starbringer."
"... Edward Elric."
"So... It'll probably be too much to ask you to forget that you saw me take that loooong fall..."
"Yep..."
"Thought so."
"Yep..."
"Yeah... Nice weather we're having!"
"It's been nice all week."
"That's nice... Well, see ya!"
"Wait a minute! What are you?" he jumped up to stop her from running off, "Nothing human can survive that fall!"
"...Yeah, you caught me. I'm not human." she replied slyly, "I'm a pink elephant."
"Ryn..." he whined.
"Okay, so I'm not a elephant!"
"..."
"I'm a dragon."
Fullmetal stumbled backwards as if she struck him. That was as believable as her being a pink elephant. "Dragon!?! No way!"
"Yes way!" she bounced out of the crater she made, "You said it yourself, no human could survive such a fall."
"Alright, then. Let's just say, I believe you." he stated calmly, "Where are you from?
"Some where else."
"Must you be so obtuse!"
"Uh, yeah... I believe so!" she grinned innocently.
The human sighed and shook his head. The self-proclaimed dragon had taken his mind off his main objective--find a way home--for just a few welcomed moments. He should thank her for it. And she had also gave him something else to think about.
"Did you come through the Gate?" he asked the question that plagued him.
"What gate?" she asked in turn, her head cocked to the side like a curious puppy, "I was sucked through a portal some stupid wizard created to kill or, at the very least, control me; but mostly, hoping to kill this one."
"No Gate? How is that possible?!"
"Magic, I guess. Natural ability? A stupid son of bitch of wizard? I don't know. All I know is that there was no gate and the last thing I remember, before I was fall from thousands of feet in the air, was hearing the cackling of that damned wizard." she replied, "Anyways, what's with you and gates?"
"The Gate is how I got to this world." Edward answered tiredly, "I used the Philosopher’s Stone to restore my brother's body. I was taken through the Gate as an equivalent exchange."
"Damn... That's deep." she muttered more to herself than to him, "I know! Let me help you!"
"Huh?" he stared in disbelief.
"You're trying to find your way home, right? Let me help you!"
"...What about you?"
"Eh, don't worry about me. I'll be alright. It'll be fun helping you!"
"Thank you."
