Just a brief listing of the books I'm reading.
I know I’m the late guy to the party on this, but I just finished the Kite Runner last night. Overall I was impressed with the author’s slice-of-life narration and cultural explorations. The story about two friends growing up in Afghanistan stands out against a backdrop of war and devastation. The book inspires me to learn more about Asian and Middle Eastern affairs. The nightly news fails to highlight these regions of the globe or their people.
I was also concurrently reading The Night Listener by Armistead Maupin. I wish I hadn’t seen the movie with Robin Williams before reading this book. The author weaves a mysterious tale about a curious boy dying of AIDS, and a man who befriends him. Heavy on dialogue and character development, this book is thoroughly engrossing. It’s one of those rare books that places an openly gay protagonist as its central character. If I said anymore I would give away too much.
