My family and I left New Orleans on Saturday with just enough clothes for a few days, a few CDs and DVDs, and two of our computers. We thought we would be home by today...

We celebrated the twins' birthday at my brother's house here in Texas. For a few hours everything was alright.

Watching our city turn into a disgusting war zone, an example of humanity at its absolute worst is unbearable.

And yet, there are those stories that make you smile. The ones that make you feel like there is hope for us, just maybe...

My daughter Annemarie is 6 years old. She is vaguely aware of what is going on, and yet she still thinks this vacation is going to end soon and we'll be back home and she'll tell her teacher all about how much fun Texas is. We have been shopping at Wal-Mart and the HEB grocery daily, living one day at a time until the money runs out. Last night, Annemarie went with my mother and my aunt to Wal-Mart to buy the evening meal. As they were leaving the store, she saw a container for people to leave donations to the "homeless and helpless victims of Hurricane Katrina". She looked to my mom and said, "Granny, we really should donate something to those poor people!"

She did not understand that we are those people.
