I finished off another Viking knit necklace today. I still have to figure out the costs and the price for it but thought you'd all enjoy seeing it and some of the picts I took recently of the earlier experimental piece I worked on. I've looked at it and have priced it at $80NZ (apx $64US at an 80c exchange rate). It took a few hours less than the bronze fish necklace and the focal piece in the fish piece cost about $15 to $20NZ.
I used 24g black Artistic wire on this one. It was supposed to be a bracelet, I wanted to do a few bracelets to go with the one necklace to put all at the booth at Craftworld. But I had to add some wire to make it an idea bracelet length and didn't want to just add a small piece (it was almost done). It was also looking rather nice and I figured it would be better to keep going and make it a necklace instead.
I've used a dark purple 16g wire to finish it off, used 18g gun metal coloured wire and 22g orchid purple wire to create a nice pendant & supplemented it with a couple of pieces of light purple dyed sugalite.
It's been a tricky one to work on and I've made gun metal jump rings to help it all sit right. I've decided that instead of putting a clasp in the back of the neck, I've worked the hook into the design & used jump rings as a part of it.
This piece took me about 8 1/2 hours, I did blow through and waste some wire partly because I'm in uncharted waters as far as what I want to do vs what might work for the piece and how it sits when someone wears it.
There's a glimpse and more under the cut.
A close up of the focal pendant piece I made.
Packed, waiting for it's price tag and for me to get started on making the scrolls for the pieces.
Here's the piece I experimented with just before I finished the above. I wanted to experiment with 2 techniques in this one: double weave and changing gauged wire for a tapered look. I think I'll drop the tapering for now and practice the double weaving. I need to check my wire to be sure I've got uncoated copper and silver to use for the patina pieces.
Here's a pict of the piece before it is drawn through the holes.
Here's what it looks like after it's been drawn. It looks different doesn't it? I love that moment when you pull the piece through the right hole and it transforms from loops I wove to this.
It was definitely a practice experimental piece. I stripped the wire in some places & the flaws are visible in some pieces. I turned it into a bracelet, C doesn't mind the odd flaws.
I used some dyed South African blood stone we'd picked up on sale late last year and used these in it.
I'm working on a bracelet now, almost done with it. It's going to be with a bright silver coloured Artistic wire and I'm going to supplement it somehow with bright red seed beads, Swarovski or triangular Miyuki beads. I'll cap it off with either 18g black or 16 gun metal probably, I'll have to see what it looks like when I'm closer to being done.
