You have a very good eye. I have a question, do you have that "good eye" all the time or does it "appear" when you have the camera in your hands?

You just reminded me of a time in college when I passed someone's dorm room and saw what I knew was an antique chair.
Me: "1890's?"
Him: "1880's. You have a good eye."
Me: "Of course - I've been looking at antiques my entire life."
I guess my "eye" is on all the time? I drew when I was young and gave that up (don't remember why), I've studied art and antiques (esp costumes and jewelry but also furniture, etc) my entire life; I am a "beta" for my sweetheart's paintings now and before that her sculptures when she was in art school.
I love looking - I spent so much time in antique stores, in shops and cities just walking and browsing, so "looking" is something I've always done. And I like being by myself to slow down and take the time I want to just look at things, without having to adhere to someone else's schedule. Like when I went to NYC and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge (I wish I had a camera with me that day to record how intensely blue the sky was, the gold of the afternoon sun washed across the rose-rust bricks, the Statue of Liberty in the distance.)
It helps that I don't have a car right now and haven't for a while. When I'm on foot or my bicycle I can notice things, slow down; I can't notice a thing sitting in a car.
And that was way more answer than you needed so I guess the short version is - Yes, it's on all the time.
Well now it all makes sense, how when you look at an icon or a/w you see more than just the icon or a/w you see the swirls, color, light shading etc. I am not always observant about details and my boss is very observant, he has taught me a lot but there is just so much you can learn. But it's taken years to develop of course, and I'm still learning! It's really no different than learning to use any tool (the camera, for instance) except you literally take it with you everywhere you go and has no on/off switch.
I didn't truly appreciate abstract art in general, for instance, until my sweetie went to a classical art school and I saw a lot of mediocre to middling realist or representational paintings. When I was a teenager my favorite artist was Renoir; I loved high Victorian with all it's frills. My tastes have refined a bit, I think.
What I lack, as I mentioned, is a sense of the greater whole, the overall "plot" if you will. I hope to be able to develop that too.
