Quarterly report from the soap opera that is my life....
So, I'm still juggling a very part time practice, and a job search, with family and social life. Not much has changed on the surface.
But... a couple of things HAVE changed, for the better. I've become a runner.
What started as a networking opportunity with other inhouse lawyers, became a real athletic interest. I completed my first 10K on Mother's Day, and thus set a personal best (1:14). I know I'll only keep it up if I have other runs, so I've registered for a 5K on May 29, with the intention of doing two other runs in the same series (10K on Aug 27, 8K on Oct 22).
This also means by early June I'll be able to finally be a client of BIL Kevin's coaching service. I don't know which of his coaches will be working with me, but it's kinda cool. And nice to be able to support his small business in a financial tangible way...and get something positive out of it too.
(My mental and physical health have both improved greatly, just by running 25-35 min, 3x a week).
I've also started dating someone locally, who happens to be called Wendy!
(Loyal readers may recall that my long time, semi long distance girlfriend is named Wendy. So now I have three Wendys in my life: BuffaloWendy my gf, TorontoWendy the "woman I'm dating", and RollerDerbyWendy who is dating the father of BuffaloWendy's children (I'm friends with him, and occasionally help him with kid-minding when his roller derby reffing obligations conflict.)
I've become fast friends with TorontoWendy's husband. (They identify as poly, and everyone's totally fine with that). As it happens TorontoWendy has been away on a two week business trip, and I've been hanging out with her husband (and their daughter, to an extent). It's worked out well. We're compatible on many levels but not romantically inclined towards one another.
I've been slowly developing a romance with a firefighter (swoon). Scheduling has been a major issue; we're both interested but there are two spouses, three teenagers, four jobs, and 75km between us, so it may be a "twice a year when he's at Fire College" type thing. He's a complete sweetheart and wonderful to spend time with, and the feeling is apparently mutual; I'm sure we'll be fine with whatever we work out.
Obligatory job hunt update
I've been putting out applications and networking, but nothing suitable has come up, in terms of an in house position. I'm thinking of returning to legal aid, but in an executive capacity (Exec Dir of a local clinic) -- it would be an interim step to being General Counsel in the public interest again. I'm also considering senior inhouse positions at for-profit, big corporate Canada type places, in employment/labour -- as an interim step to being General Counsel or VP Legal (in either public or private interest).
AN vibes welcomed -- for motivation to get those apps in and networking calls done, as much as for the apps themselves! There has been a lot of low level activity in other areas of my work, and of my life, so sometimes something gets lost between I want to apply and I have applied :( :(
Oh, and I'm in a country music phase again. It started with some Johnny Cash while running one day, then was spurred on by a weeklong trip to Alberta. I'm a big Tim McGraw fan now.
