knitting - cool stuff and a question

Some very cool socks indeed:

A question: what would you recommend for a very first attempt at socks?

I'd love suggestions for a pattern for a *narrow* foot, size 6 US (36-37 Euro, size 4 UK), yarn types, and needles/equipment. I have never attempted the magic loop technique, not sure if it's a great idea to do a new technique on a new type of garment all at once!

I have plastic DPNs, metal and bamboo circs. Willing to buy new equipment if necessary.

I'd prefer a free pattern but would pay a modest amount for a decent pattern (or borrow the book from the library).

I really need to learn how to make socks so that I can make a pair of these for my DH. (Is size 9 women's about size 8 men's? He takes size 8-9 in a medium width depending on the cut of shoes.)

I would love a pair for myself but I fear I'd need to do a lot of adjusting to the pattern, and I don't tend to wear a lot of socks (mostly tights, nylons or barefoot).

Any suggestions welcome!
