more about the future

Luke's entry about "The Future" made me stop and think about mine. I had a meeting today with our externship coordinator, who helps students in my program find long term internship placements. She suggested that my "mini-placement," which lasts for 6 weeks next summer, take place in a setting that puts me a bit out of my comfort zone so that I can get the experience. For me, this most likely means a hospital setting working with adults in intensive rehabilitation. Stroke victims who need both speech and swallowing therapy, traumatic brain injury survivors, etc. Just thinking about working in a rehab center with that population scares the crap out of me. Even harder would be to work in hospice care. I honestly can't imagine working with people on a daily basis for whom imminent death is a real possibility, if not a given.

Because of my lovely grant from the Dept. of Education, my long-term placement has to be in the public schools (praise be). This is where I can see myself working several years down the road. I keep telling myself that I'll be fine in a hospital working with stroke victims (it's only 6 weeks after all), but there's a part of me that's dreading it already.

Other than that...the whooping cough has left my body, but has left asthma in its place for an indeterminate amount of time. I'm taking several inhalers and other medications on a regular basis and it's not been fun so far. I can only hope that this is a temporary inconvenience and not something I'm going to have to deal with for a long time.

Finally, Aaron's parents are coming to visit in a couple of days. Having visitors makes me see my home and my town from a different perspective. It's kind of like watching a movie you've seen a hundred times with someone who's never seen it. You experience everything in a new light. State College has enough to offer, but I've become bored with it recently and so showing other people around will hopefully make it more exciting for me.
