this summer, i'm dedicating myself to getting out of my 'cutsie' cartoony style and into something a little more solid. here is the third sketch i've done in over two years:
.
i know pictures don't usually need explanation, but this one's chock full of personal symbolism.
the sidewalk on the right is a face--my mother--cold and demanding (the sewer grill make up the teeth and the tent are the eyelids).
the left side of the street fences in a garden; and as evidenced by the wilted flowers on the sidewalk, anything that gets on the other side of the fence is hard-pressed to survive.
this is where the 'sleeping' bird in the girl's hands comes in. it's place was in the garden.
oowever, the fence also symbolizes something of a cage.
so outside of the cage, the bird dies.
it's the spirit of the bird from which the perspective of the scene is taken.
of course, the little girl doesn't yet know that the bird is dead.
just thought i'd share that with you guys since i'm really excited about getting the chance to finally draw something, although i am a bit rusty.
