Summary: “Fine if you’re so brilliant, smart arse, tell me the reagents and conditions needed when turning a aromatic amine into a azo dye. Both stages,” Frank smirked smugly, it was one of the hardest questions he knew. He silently watched as Gerard thought over the answer.
Author's Note: I've got my january A2 exam in less than two weeks so after heading home from college I've spent the entire night revising and getting high from the pens I've been using. I basically wrote this to try and help me revise, hope it works. So yeah, there will be chemistry words in here. Think of it this way, if you've never taken A level chemistry you might just learn something pointless haha
“Right so if I react ethanoic acid and ethanol together I’ll get a....a....erm....”
“An ester, Frank,”
“Oh yes an ester. And the other product is.....”
“Water,”
“There, question 1 is complete,” Frank grinned, looking up from his chemistry homework to see Gerard’s annoyed expression. “What’s up with you moody?”
“When’s our exam Frank?” Gerard asked, staring at the younger boy as he shifted on the floor, uncomfortably.
“Two days,” Frank mumbled, looking back towards his mock paper.
“Exactly. We have two days left of revision and you can’t even remember what reactants make an ester,” Gerard grumbled, glaring at Frank.
“S’not my fault Gee, you know I find chemistry hard,” Frank said, looking up at Gerard with sad eyes. Gerard sighed and rubbed his hands over his face.
“Okay Frank, if I refluxed propan-2-ol with the oxidising agent acidified postassium dichronmate, what products would I make?” Gerard asked, watching as Frank’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Is it..... Propanone and..... erm..... water?” Frank grinned triumphantly as he watched Gerard nod his head.
“Correct. If I added Tollen’s reagent to an aldehyde, what would be observed?”
“An orange precipitate?” Frank’s triumphant grin slipped from his face as he watched Gerard shake his head.
“A silver mirror Frank, a orange precipitate is Brady’s reagent” Gerard said, smiling sadly.
“Fine if you’re so brilliant, smart arse, tell me the reagents and conditions needed when turning a aromatic amine into a azo dye. Both stages,” Frank smirked smugly, it was one of the hardest questions he knew. He silently watched as Gerard thought over the answer.
“Simple, you’d need concentrated nirtrous acid, a concentrated sulphuric acid and to keep it below 10 degrees for the first stage. Then you’d need phenol and aqueous sodium hydroxide for the second stage”
Frank blinked at his friend before pulling his notes from the floor and rummaging through them. When his eyes landed on his notes for preparing an azo dye his eyes widened comically.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Frank whispered, groaning and looking up towards his smiling friend. Throwing his notes to the floor he rested his head against the side of Gerard’s bed.
Frank and Gerard were currently locked away in the older boys’ room, their chemistry notes spread out in front of them on the floor. Frank had his back rested against the bed, as Gerard sat in the middle of the floor, surrounded by his notes.
“How is it that you can answer that question perfectly,” Frank grumbled watching as Gerard picked up his notes on proton n.m.r and began answering the questions.
“Frank you may have only started revising for this exam now but, like most of our class, I started revising at least a month ago.” Gerard said, eyes never leaving his paper as he scribbled away furiously. Frank watched the way his friends’ eyebrows furrowed in concentration, his tongue briefly poking out between his lips and his eyes sparkled as he remembered the answer. Frank couldn’t help but think how adorable he looked. Shaking his head Frank went back to looking through his notes. He spent about 5 minutes studying the mechanism for the nitration of benzene before throwing his notes angrily to the floor again and growling.
“I give in,” Frank growled, glaring at the offending chemistry notes. “I might as well stop revising, I’m never going to pass this stupid exam,” Gerard sighed sadly, placing his work on the floor before calmly looking at Frank.
“You’re not going to fail Frank. Just because you can’t remember all the reagents and conditions of reactions doesn’t mean anything. You can do percentage yield calculations better than I can remember,” Gerard said, trying to reassure his friend. Frank rolled his eyes, annoyed.
“That’s only because you completely suck at maths and always calculate the wrong molecular mass,” Frank huffed. Gerard sighed before standing up, he headed towards Frank before leaning down and placing a gentle kiss on the boys lips. He smiled as he straightened up and headed towards his bedroom door leaving a blushing Frank staring at his back.
“Come on you whiney brat, let’s take a coffee break,” Gerard said, turning around and smirking at his friend. Frank snapped out his gaze and glared at his boyfriend.
“I resent that comment. Fucking Einstein,” Frank said, before standing up and following Gerard out the door.
“Einstein was a physicist, not a chemist,”
“Yeah? Well you’re just an arsehole then,”
“Fuck you,”
A/N: I apologise again to those who have no idea what half of the stuff means in this fic because, seriously, even I don't know what half of it means and I have an exam on it on the 24th D:
Anyway I'll probably continue it and create the Chemistry Revision drabbles or something. I'm hoping it may be a new way of helping me revise, maybe haha
