our office has gremlins.
last week, we had both photocopiers out of action (1 broke down the day after the engineer had visited the other one), and both our scanners were failing to integrate with our bespoke system. As I seem to be the only person in the office with a bit of technical know-how, guess who has to try and get IT to fix it? They won't do a site visit even though they're only 10 mins down the road, so they *email* me (not phone) to ask me to insert a CD and similar idiotic things...
On Monday, our entire system went for a holiday after a major power cut in the morning. Power came on at 09:52- system came on-line at 21:20 apparently. Course that's probably what happens when you run on the secondary server for 3 or 4 months...
our PC's seem to decide which printer they want the default to be- every so often they will decide to print to another printer, sometimes one not even in our office (the Aberdeen depot seems to get quite a few)
In the midst of trying to sort out any minor faults (to leave IT with time to look at the major ones), I had my performance review meeting with my absentee line manager and her boss.
I say absentee because she is just starting work again (part time) after a 10 month absence caused by DVT induced lower leg amputation. Overall she's been off for about 15 months, so I didn't actually have a line manager or review last year.
The meeting went well, but it was embarassing listening to the compliments flowing, to the point that I was getting paranoid about when the BadStuff(tm) was going to hit. Both of them were saying I'm doing a great job (working without direct oversight and no crisis for that long helps) and that they wanted to take some of my current tasks off me (perhaps even put me in charge of someone else) to give me more time to work on some other projects in the department. What these Projects might be is anybody's guess, but I'm guessing technical stuff as they've picked me, and they're unlikely to be easy.
Unfortunately, the review has nothing to do with this year's pay rise (that's worked out for the entire division-finance). However, if my job changes significantly, then I might be in with a chance. I've also been told (jokingly) that they're not going to let me leave the department until I've got it in order and working super-efficiently. I thought that was the manager's job?
