AND A WRITER'S BLOCK FOR THE LOLS
If you were asked to recommend one destination in your country to LiveJournal friends who had never been to your country before, what place would you choose, and why?
Easy. I'd recommend you book a hotel in York - it's the old capital of Britain, and is a historical city. It's surrounded by the ruins of an old fortress wall which you can walk along - which I also recommend in the summer so you can see all of York nicely~ - and which is a large landmark for York. It's also got the Minster - which is basically a HUGE white Gothic cathedral which you can see from most places in York and the inside is amazing!! There are also NUMEROUS churches and the like around the city... We also have streets dubbed The Shambles, which are old, OLD buildings built notoriously close together on old cobbled streets~ :D The city is also notorious for its ghosts and there are tons of ghost walks. It's a tourist friendly place with plenty of museums, tons of old buildings, and loads of shops~ It's also a pretty safe city too!! It's got everything you need if you're new to England or the North~
Then if you really want to go shopping, then visit Leeds. It's not as scenic, granted. It's your staple Northern city. Sort of industrial. The city centre is usually teeming with people though due to the gigantic amount of shops and there are plenty of museums and galleries to keep you entertained. I'd recommend if you come to the North to at least check Leeds out. It's a pretty cool place! And is getting more and more modern. Seriously. The way their architecture is going...it's gonna look like Manhattan one day. :D
Finally, I'd then recommend for day trips places like Harrogate - another historical city and notoriously more upperclass. It's a spa town, famous for its REALLY SMELLY but apparently healthy spa water. D: Architecture and gardening enthusiasts might want to check this place out. It's really, really English LOL. XDDD And if you want to visit the beach then I recommend Whitby. It's where Dracula was set so there's a big Goth following here. Its a really lovely port, very scenic, tons of landmarks and things to see and do, and, like, totally tons of fish, yo. XDDDDDD It's a really pretty place and I love to visit it. The other nearby towns like Scarborough are more if you like arcade games and the like. BE WARNED THOUGH. THESE ARE BY THE NORTH SEA. IT IS COLD WATER, I CAN TELL YOU. XDDDDD
York itself is set in the Vale of York -- flat land. BUT go out a little tiny bit and you hit the Dales and further afield are the Pennines so if you like the countryside you ain't far away. The Dales are beautiful any time of year and some of them are beautifully remote~ :DDDDD Rolling hills, fields, and landmarks~~ :DD It's a very folklore-like place~ The Yorkshire Moors are also wonderfully creepy and Gothic - and you'll pass through them to get to the coast! If you've ever seen An American Werewolf in London where those two guys are on the moors...well, that's actually the very Moors I'm on about~~ :DD Don't worry though. There aren't THAT many werewolves nowadays~~ <-We're both superstitious and overly proud of our legends here~ XDD There are lots of things like that in Yorkshire.
