Gokusen: Series 2

Jun 29, 2008 19:50

So!
The second series of Gokusen is finished and, as is my LJ tradition, a review follows!

Synopsis:

Shirokin Gakuin - the school from Season 1 - has shut down!! Yankumi soon became in charge of a group of Elementary kids but due to her occasional exclamations of Yakuza-only words, concerned and irritated parents made sure Yankumi lost her job. Meanwhile, another school, Kurogin Gakuin, faces its own set of woes; one of the teachers has resigned after a bad experience with class 3-D there and so Kyooto (who was placed there shortly after the closure Shirokin) is set the task of getting a new teacher...someone with guts...someone to stand up against those belligerent punks... But in a mix up at the office where Kyooto was trying to hire a brutal-looking giant of a male teacher, the forms are sent to Yankumi and she is hired, the mix-up becoming the curse of Kyooto - as the superintendant at Kurogin is a man to be reckoned with - not only is Yankumi's neck on the line but so is Kyooto's! Can Yankumi tackle a new crowd of delinquents? Can she tame these guys too? Well...!!

--
If you watched Season 1 I totally understand if you guys are unsure about Season 2 - I missed the old class too and it wasn't until at least episode 3 that I could really emphasize with these guys! But trust me - and I mean it. If you get the chance, do not throw away your opportunity to watch Yankumi back in action!
So what's new? At first you may look around the class and think...ahh...similar personas...this gang has a new tough guy like Uchii was in the first season, and the leader (Hayato) has similar hair to Shin...and yeah, this may seem familiar but you have to let the series progress...and the first episode is key to the changes in personas.
Yabuki Hayato is the leader of the usual 'top-dog' gang, alongside secondary leader Odagiri Ryu (who in the first episode is the first black sheep that Yankumi tries to bring back into the class) and the two characters work along fabulously! Hayato is similar to Shin in his readiness to fight but has a witty, laid-back side to him - he is almost the joker of the class; whilst Ryu is quieter and keeps things bottled up, with a tendency to dodge questions but be incredibly loyal to his friends.
In this season we are treated to just as much character development as there was in season one and, trust me on this one, you do grow to love all the characters in this one.
As usual, Gokusen has a wonderful way of developing the class from the first episode (pipe-wielding maniac punks) to later in the season (pacifistic and loyal guys) - but don't let that make you think the fights are less likely.
Plenty of action, punches, and kicks just like season one but with all knew bad guys, storylines, and it even looks more into the families of some of the characters too (even if some of it is only suggested).
The episodes go along at a great pace, and there is plenty there for both new and old fans of  Gokusen to enjoy (although season one characters such as Shin and Uchii do not make an appearance at all - probably due to the actors' being fairly busy which is a shame) old fans will be pleased to see the regular appearance of Kuma - who even has a whole episode dedicated to the trials and tribulations of the family ramen shop which had a backstory linked to his father which fans should remember well (it was quite the tearjerker!).
OH and Kyooto's hilarious facial expressions? Yes. They are still in it - along with FIGHT-OH and Yankumi's hilarious attempts to achieve a love-life but with a new flame this time! Will she succeed?! So...expect the same bizarre comedy that season one offered, guys!

Of course, as usual, someone such as myself simply typing all this down will never get the bigger picture across to you. If you've never watched Gokusen quickly go and watch it now! You won't regret it. And old fans, if you are hesistant, don't be. I was like that a few weeks ago but I ended up with a lump in my throat by the last episode which I have just watched. If you already watched it - then I hope you enjoyed it too!
The series, I know, is not that new...but gimme a break. I write this for friends mainly in the hopes that they read this and perhaps get into the J-drama scene, or perhaps just Gokusen itself! This season was also new to me too...!! :D

Overall:

Out of 10? Ahhh 10 o' course! It's Gokusen, guys.
*In case you were unaware at all there is a season 3 which I am soon to watch myself!! Fingers crossed it can pull of a third season!!*

Age rating? Erm, about a 12...15 at the most... Some language and violence of course, but come on, it wouldn't be Gokusen without those two!! XD

Additional Information:
Hayato is played by: Akanishi Jin (some of you may know him as a member of KAT-TUN/an idol j-pop singer)
Odagiri is played by: Kamenashi Kazuya (another member of KAT-TUN/an idol j-pop singer also)
Takeda Keita is played by: Teppei Koike (leading role in the live-action film adaption of Lovely*Complex)
Also look out for some familiar faces including Kuranuki Masahiro (starred as Kaname Tosen in Rock Musical Bleach NCitBH)!! (I notice him in the last episode...my bad... >.>;;)
This series is 10 episodes long with the last episode extra-long rather than a special this time around.

Anyway. Hoped that help whoever you are.
Sorry if it was no use - I'll try better next time!!
:D SAYONARA...nya! <- Watch Gokusen season 2 to get the 'nya' thing... XD If it makes you go WTF when you see it first time round you get 100 cool points. (^0^)V

j-drama, gokusen
