I've watched the first six eps of season 4 this week (on Amazon Prime). I hadn't seen them before. I just have to share the squee of "Trust Metric"!
First of all, when Colby calls Charlie on the train...he tells him he's calling him to reach Don because his phone's not part of the FBI network, but I noticed that he's got Charlie's number memorized (or on speed dial?) Either way, he hasn't had much reason to contact Charlie directly before, which made me think Charby thoughts. I think he trusted Charlie to take him seriously, and that Charlie bearing the news to Don would be more likely to get Don to take him seriously. Whereas, calling Don directly, he could expect that Don would waste his time being pissed off.
When Charlie does the trust metric math and is unable to come up with a decisive answer to whether Colby's being honest or not, he tells the team he's got, "Nothing...Nothing that we don't already know in our hearts." Charlie is not ordinarily moved to such utterances. Clearly, Colby's more than a co-worker to him. Then in Hollywood Homicide, after we've seen The Team (except Megan) be rather standoffish towards Colby, he turns up at Charlie's house, and Charlie hugs him and gives him a hero's welcome. Alan's pretty happy to see him, too; Charlie's enthusiasm is contagious.
The next two episodes, Don asks Colby whether he's going to stay in LA, as the FBI has given him an award and offered him a position in Washington, DC, which is probably a better place for an ambitious agent to get noticed. And he wouldn't have this awkward history with his co-workers in DC. I couldn't help thinking he wanted to stay in LA because that's where Charlie was. ;-)
Still getting used to Extra-hairy S4 Charlie...
