End of an era

I turned my keys into the old place tonight, so as of 9 pm, I am officially done moving. I haven't unpacked yet, but everything is in the new place, and I no longer have to make any trips back and forth, and for that I am so grateful. It was a very long 10 days.

It was bittersweet locking the door for the last time tonight. I realized this morning that the apartment I am leaving is the longest I have lived at a residence since 1981. I moved in on March 17, 2005. A lot happened in that apartment. It saw me through probably one of my darkest periods, being laid off after only having lived in Phoenix for 3 weeks. I knew no one and it was not a happy time. I've undergone two surgeries while living there. I went back to school there, in something I really had a passion for instead of just going to school to go. I made my first full Thanksgiving dinner completely from scratch. I had some great trips. I had some not so great trips. I met some great people. I met some not so great people.

As I was loading the vacuum into my car and taking the last bag of trash to the dumpster, I ran into a couple of guys that moved in 2 years ago. They were cleaning their apartment and moving out tonight as well. We lamented about the state of the complex, how it is not even remotely competitive in price with the rest of the city now, and how the residents and the neighborhood, while never stellar, are rapidly going downhill. In the last 3 months we've had an onslaught of gang graffiti, police searches overhead, and even a pistol whip/car theft in the parking lot on a Monday morning. So believe me, it is time to move on. I am almost doubling in size of living space, have an office now, two huge patios, an end unit upstairs with views in the front and back, and am paying less than I was for the 1/1 I'm moving out of, so it is a win all around. More than anywhere I can remember living though, I feel like I'm definitely leaving a piece of my life behind.
