I don't do the "I don't do labels" thing, and I am not immune to wondering where I fit into schemes involving labels. But after a few too many posts about this in one community I belong to, I think I've crystalized why the movement toward alternative labels irritates me ( Read more... )

Well, no, not necessarily. At least, a lot, I'd hazard even most Christians don't consider that to be all that's necessary for one to be a Christian. Even on that point alone, I'm a bit greyer than most.

I'm totally guilty of the feminist, thing, personally. I don't think feminist = "manhating hairylegged bulldyke" (actually most of the people I know who identify as feminist generally present in a much more femminine manner), I avoid it though is because so much of the movement as I've experienced it resorts to demeaning others as a means of raising themselves. (Much in the same way fat acceptence movements often demean people who are naturally skinny.) Obviously I know not everyone involved in the movement is like this, but enough are that it makes me want to distance myself from it.

Why I feel like that about the label 'feminist', but not the label 'Christian', considering just how much assinine behaviour can be attributed to Christians, I'll never know, except that I just feel better prepared to take up that banner than the other. *shrug*
