I have revised my opinion of Arturo Perez-Reverte.
I can still firmly recommend Queen of the South. Having read The Flanders Panel twice to make sure I got it* and now being halfway through my slogging through The Club Dumas I find it a bit more brain-candy than I like. It's well-written enough to keep me reading and I'll go through it twice to be sure, but very self-consciously like easier Umberto Eco. Save yourself the time and read the Eco or Rushdie.
OTOH, it's annoying me and I plan to donate these two to the library in this building, but I'm going to finish this and read it again to make sure I got it. At least I am continuing to read.

slinkr, you are so right about the ending. It's a cop-out. I saw it coming a mile away, but that is a STUPID way for the plot to go. That's the worst reason of a dozen it could have gone that way, so bad it never occurred to me.
