While everyone else worries about the comics, I fret about toons. *out of touch*

After reading the summaries for upcoming episodes of Justice League, I am slightly worried.

Spoilers for: JLU episodes "The Once and Future Thing" (mostly part II) and for upcoming, as-of-yet unaired episodes (based on summaries from TV Tome, which may or may not be accurate).

Like I said, I've been pleased with the recent episodes of JLU. However, I'm a bit concerned about where they're going with it. We've got two episodes left in this season, and the last episode is (currently- titles have changed before) called "Epilogue."
That sounds kind of final, doesn't it? I haven't heard whether there'll be a fifth season or not, but this may well be the last episode of Justice League. Anyway, let's look at the summary:

Fifty years in the future, the history of the Justice League is the key to Batman's darkest secret...and his final destiny.

...fifty years in the future? Huh, that sounds familiar. What else happens fifty years in the- oh. Right. This kid shows up. The one on the left.

This doesn't sound like it's going to be time travel like "The Once And Future Thing". It seems like it's going to be a flash-forward to the actual, canonical future of the Justice League. There are, as far as I can see, two reasons to set an episode in that time period- to either confirm or deny that the "Batman Beyond" universe is part of continuity.

This makes me a *little* nervous. I'm rather fond of Terry (you might have noticed) and the last time he appeared on JLU, they, ah... they kind of killed him. Which I was not really all that happy about, but clearly it was an alternate future anyway, they reset the timeline, it's all good, right? Right? (Also it brought us the "three Batmen in a room" scene of joy, and thus I can forgive it. A little.) But it does make me worry about what they'll do with him in the Real Future. I know a lot of people look at Batman Beyond as an alternate timeline *anyway*, which I can't blame them for- RotJ, and all that. But I'm pretty attached to it. It *works* for me. I'd like at least the option to still view it as canon. And of course, they're certainly not required to provide me with my preferred viewing. This is a purely subjective objection, based on my own personal attachments. But damn it, I *am* attached. And I'm worried about Terry.

...and, frankly, about Bruce. "Darkest secret"? "Final destiny"? I am leery of the words "final destiny." Far too often they are simultaneous with "death." (Well. "Noble deeds and *then* death.") I don't want Bruce dead, either. (Come on! It's the future! Eighty is young and spry! Sixty is the new thirty! He's got years yet. Really. *in denial*) I don't... *think* that's where they're going, but... I really have no idea what form this "final destiny" will take, and it worries me. And "darkest secret?" I mean- really? Darker than the whole RotJ deal? I don't even have an educated guess what either destiny or secret could be, and because they both could potentially affect the canon of which I am fond, I wibble.

There *is* potential for good- Batman Beyond focused pretty exclusively on Bruce and Terry, and I've wondered a lot about what's happened to the rest of the League. And it could show Old!Bruce reconnecting a bit with his former allies, which would be nice, but... I worry anyway.

On the other hand, the description could well be misleading. The summary for Flashpoint, for instance, originally made reference to a "fallen comrade", which it no longer does. So maybe it'll change or something and I'm fretting for nothing. *frets anyway*

Next up: the Justice League of the Future (Batman Beyond style). (possibly tomorrow. Because am tired.)
