at first, it was annoying. i'd sort through my mail some days and mutter, "they can't even spell my name right!".  other days, i'd roll my eyes because i'd get promotional mailers in duplicate.

after about a year and a half, i've finally figured it out.  i'm getting someone else's mail.  her name is one letter off from mine, but she is definitely not just a second, misspelled entry of me in the database. this epiphany came when Banana Republic sent their latest revision of yellow credit cards, and i got two. one with my name and account number, and one with the other chick's name and account number.

no wonder i got a birthday card from Banana Republic in August, when they already sent me one in March!

this chick has a better [retail] life than me, so i haven't exactly put "correct this error" at the top of my to-do list.  while i do get a bit more junk mail (she hasn't blocked herself from mailings from "partners" so i get the occasional left-field catalog), i've also gotten some freebies and extra coupons. but i feel justified because it's not like i actively notified someone that they should send her mail to my address. they even changed the address when i moved somehow - i wish all my accounts would notice when i move and just update themselves like that! and, i've missed out on quite a few Banana Republic birthday cards in past years for unexplained reasons.

i've just this week realized how dangerous it is that i've got a card in her name attached to her account number. i find it odd though, that i get her "junk" mail and have never gotten a bill. maybe she has a new account and just uses that card. i know i only get BR bills when i actually have spending activity.

today, i got a $15 gift card from MAC cosmetics.  i've never shopped there, and yet the card says,

"AS A VALUED M.A.C. CUSTOMER
AND A MEMBER OF OUR CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT
PLEASE ENJOY THIS $15 GIFT CARD,"
BLAH BLAH BLAH.

OKAY!

moral issues aside (swoosh!), what should i spend my MAC money on?
